Ingrown toenails affect around 5% of the population and are one of the most common foot problems seen in clinic. They occur when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, redness, swelling and sometimes infection.
The most common causes are incorrect nail cutting, cutting nails too short or down the sides, tight or ill-fitting footwear, repeated pressure, and trauma. In many cases, ingrown toenails are completely preventable with proper nail care and early treatment.
Leaving them untreated can lead to worsening pain and infection — especially for those with diabetes or poor circulation. Get in touch for more information ✉️
