meet jazz, one of our billiant panelists for the punjabi mental health podcast in birmingham! ✨
redefining the face of punjabi music for well over a decade, jaz dhami is a british-punjabi singer, songwriter and performer, whose music transcends cultural, class and generational divides. born in birmingham, england, with diasporic roots that find home in hoshiarpur, punjab, jaz’s music is a reflection of his unique identity – one that is marked by familial struggles of immigration, as well as the cultural resilience of a people partitioned in formation of nations now known as india and pakistan.
deeply local in his linguistic approach to punjabi music, jaz simultaneously juxtaposes the hyperlocal with the global by way of his constant foray into genres of fusion, pop, folk and hip-hop, crafting a sound that is both recognizable and mainstream, and at once, flavorful and distinct. in fact, his own influences in the craft span a whole spectrum of artists: from the poetically desi sardool sikandar and mohammed rafi, to pop contemporaries such as usher and chris brown.
the longevity of jaz’s artistic vision is apparent in his decorated discography — which boasts hit singles like ‘high heels’ (with collaborator yo yo honey singh), ‘theke wali,’ ‘zulfa,’ and ‘bomb bae,’ alongside alluring albums like ‘pieces of me,’ ‘roj miliye’ and his classic 2009 debut project, the self-titled ‘jaz dhami (jd).’ over the course of his musical success, jaz has found himself collaborating shoulder-to-shoulder with musical maestros such as pharrell williams, stevie wonder, chris martin (of coldplay) and more, while conjunctionally gracing important events like the queen's jubilee, where he worked with the royal orchestra to put up a splendid showcase.
outside of his music, jaz currently also leverages social media platforms like instagram to empower over 1.8 million followers by vulnerably sharing his personal and ongoing battle with cancer, in order to promote positive lifestyle change, resilience and public health transformations.
