Did you know that your scar has NO SPF protection at all?

It is so important to ensure you apply factor 50 to your scar when outside to reduce any burning or soreness to your scar. You will need to do this for
attest 5 years after your operation. We recommend for smaller scars, using a factor 50 sunblock stick, which you can roll on over your scar and apply anytime you need to. Try and keep your scar covered where possible.

Did you know there are now silicone gels which contain SPF protection to help your scar.

There are so many different ways you can mobilise your scar tissue, depending on the scar you have. All direct scar massage has to be around 4-6 weeks and make sure your surgeon is happy with you starting direct scar massage.

If your scar is white, flat and not raised - you can run your fingers over your scar in both directions. You can then do circular motions over your scar. After this you can then do “zig zag” movements up and down over your scar. Do this for approx
10-15minutes a day.

If your scar is red, raised, hard and looks like a red string or “bootlace” on your body, then you can run your fingers along your scar forwards and backwards. You can then do circular motions over your scar. You can then roll your fingers up and
down over your scar. All these techniques are light and gentle and should not cause any pain.

If your scar is very red, raised and larger than the original incision on your skin, then you can do sweeping fingers across the scar and circular motions on top of the scar. These kinds of scars also respond very well to silicone and compression.

After surgery, there is lots you can do! The most important thing to do is REST.

This will be your medicine. Rest is so powerful and healing and you and your body will need it. Make sure you are drinking plenty of clear fluids and eating a good diet rich in protein and omegas to help with the healing of your scar.

Start gentle deep breathing exercises while you are in bed. Take your time.
Start gentle mobilisation when you are ready and have good support around you. This will really help get everything moving.

Make sure you look at your scar. Even though it has a bandage on it, still look at the area. If you are allowed to have a shower, please pat dry your scar (and dressing) after your shower with a clean, dry towel.

Take your time. There is no rush. You will get there. We would be delighted to see you after 6 weeks. Contact us today, to see how we can help.

This may sound obvious, but to a lot of our clients they are surprised at how different there scar tissue feels from their normal skin. Scar tissue can feel hard and raised and sometimes “bumpy” under the surface. This is normal and all part of the healing process.

Over time, when you are able to touch your scar and start direct scar massage, this can help change the texture and feeling of the scar. Want to know more and help professional help for your scars? Contact us today!

Engaging with your scar can start as soon as you are ready. Please be gentle with yourself and take your time. Never compare to anyone else’s journey. When you have come out of surgery and are recovering, try some simple deep breathing
techniques to help calm the body but also connect with your body. If you’ve had abdominal or breast surgery, then this form of gentle breathing will start
to “mobilise the scar” under the surface - without even touching the scar!

Next, when you are ready look at the scar. You may have a dressing in place but that’s ok. Please look at the area which is covered. Once the dressing has been removed, try and look at the scar. Carry on with deep breathing and take
your time. When you are ready sweep your fingers around your scar with a good scar oil or cream on your fingers. This will hydrate the skin around the scar.

When your scar is around 4-6 weeks old and fully healed over, with no stitches or staples then you can start direct scar massage.
