Abdominal Hernia Scan
An Abdominal Hernia Scan is used to check for an abdominal wall hernia which is when an organ or body tissue squeezes through a weak spot in the wall of the abdomen, often causing a lump that you can feel and may come and go. The scan is also used to check for fluid collection or inflammation, any abnormalities and hernial size and contents.
A hernia may cause pain or discomfort, particularly when you strain or cough and can also get stuck and this is known as an incarcerated hernia which is where tissues get trapped in the outpouching and are at risk of complications.
Types of hernia include:
• Umbilical (belly button).
• Incisional (at the area of previous surgery).
• Inguinal (inner groin).
• Femoral (outer groin).
Groin hernia is when the internal body fat or part of the bowel can pass through a weak spot into the inguinal canal – a pathway for structures to pass from the abdomen to the genitalia. Groin hernia is more common in males.
