The Midlands’ oldest crematorium in Birmingham is holding an open day
The Midlands’ oldest crematorium will be opening its doors to members of the local community for an Open Day on Wednesday 8 June between 2pm and 5pm.
Birmingham Crematorium, which is located on Walsall Road in Perry Barr, opened in 1903. The Victorian crematorium is today owned and operated by end-of-life services provider, Dignity plc, which is based in Sutton Coldfield.
The 119-year-old crematorium has been a constant in an area of Birmingham that has seen huge change over the years. Notably the recent transformation of the Alexander Stadium, visible from the crematorium’s gardens of remembrance, which will host the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games this summer.
Visitors to the Open Day will have the opportunity to ask staff any questions they may have about the crematorium or the cremation process and will also be offered guided tours of the crematorium and its grounds.
Alexis Rogers, Birmingham Crematorium’s Business Leader and organiser of the Open Day said:
“On Wednesday 8 June between 2pm and 5pm we will be welcoming members of the public and funeral directors along to visit Birmingham Crematorium. We will be providing refreshments – tea, coffee, biscuits – and we will be offering guided walking tours of the crematorium, including the Chapel where we hold services, the gardens of remembrance, and the columbarium which is where urns are held.

“As one of the oldest crematoria in the UK, Birmingham Crematorium has such a rich and interesting history. The memorial tablets on the walls of the Chapel remember those who were born in the mid-1800s and in the gardens of remembrance there’s a Commonwealth War Graves Commission memorial commemorating three World War I and 64 World War II servicemen who were cremated in Perry Barr.
“Members of the team will be on hand to answer any questions visitors may have about the crematorium, the memorials or the cremation process.
“The crematorium is in close proximity to the Alexander Stadium which will be the main athletics venue for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games later this year. We’ve been meeting with the Commonwealth Games Committee regularly to ensure everything runs smoothly during the Games and members of the Committee will also be attending the Open Day on the 8 June.
“Birmingham Crematorium has witnessed so much change in Perry Barr since it opened in 1903, and it’s incredible that people across the world will be viewing our local community during the Games – some may even catch a glimpse of the crematorium if they keep their eyes peeled during the Opening Ceremony.”
The Crematorium and Memorial Group is part of Dignity plc and operates 46 crematoria and 24 cemeteries across the UK.
