Sometimes it's hard to believe how this can cause so many issues for people but it does. My patient presented with balance issues, Muffled hearing, and feeling disorientated. The patient had this wax build up in the left ear, the right ear was clear of wax but I did notice the patient had some congestion behind the ear drum which lead to a discussion about sinuses which we explored further. The patient now has a plan of action to address the sinus issues, is going to monitor the balance issue to see if it was the wax build up creating that problem and can now hear abit better. We also addressed the elephant in the room...hearing loss. I don't just remove wax I explore the issues that people have and put plans into place to help you hear better.

This is a great article highlighting the need for tighter regulations when it comes to procedures like ear wax removals. Unfortunately at the moment anyone can do ear wax removals with zero degrees, no prior medical knowledge, all they need to set up is to attend a one day course. These non clinical people see ear wax removal as a side hustle to earn extra money but unfortunately the duty of care towards the general public isn't priority.

We are now beginning to see the repercussions of non clinical individuals performing wax removals and failing to either remove the wax, failing to adhere to protocols of wax removal, we are also seeing an increase in perforated ear drums.

Referable conditions are also being missed as non clinical individuals do not perform thorough consultation and would have zero idea of where to even start.

I advise anyone who needs to have ear wax removal done to please makesure you are being seen by an Audiologist like myself, a nurse, an ENT nurse or consultant.

Experts and industry professionals are calling for tougher regulations to safeguard patients.

I had a 9 year old patient come in with mum and siblings. The patient presented with pain and Muffled hearing in one ear and had been using drops in the ear. I checked the ear and it looked like a straightforward wax removal, so I proceeded with suction and removed a lump of wax. I could see wax further down and as I tried to remove the wax the patient was finding it uncomfortable as the wax was pushing against the ear drum. So I moved to irrigation and washed the wax out, which revealed two small gems stuck in the ear. I then went in with suction and removed the gems! We all had a chuckle over this as my patients parent said they had an inkling there was a foreign object in the patients ear. My patient was beaming as they had instant relief from the pain and Muffled hearing and is now free to enjoy the summer holidays. The siblings were fascinated by how I got the gems out, hopefully they'll think twice about putting anything in their ears 👂 😅 .

I had a patient attend my clinic with an ear infection the image on the left is the right ear and the image on the right is the left ear!
The symptoms were reduced Muffled hearing and pain.

✅️The left ear is nice and healthy
⛔️The right ear is infected

The patient has been suffering for a while now, the patient wasn't prescribed any antibiotics from the GP when seen under a year ago, but was referred to ENT. The patient waited far too long before being treated, unfortunately the treatment given hasn't worked so the patient came to see me as the patient was unsure of what to do. I cleared out the debris and have written the patient a referral asking for a swab to make sure the antibiotics prescribed are suitable for for this bacterial infection.

It is important to always get these symptoms checked, an infection, if left untreated can travel into the mastoid cavity or into the brain

If you're unsure as to whether you have an infection, and can't get into the GP then please book an appointment to have this checked.
