No matter how hard you try, you can’t do or be everything to everyone all the time, and trying will only result in exhaustion, burn out, irritability, depression and anxiety.
When we neglect ourselves we complete a cycle where over time we can’t meet other people’s unrealistic expectations of us, and this will reinforce a sense of not being good enough.
If this resonates with you be aware of your cycles and try to see where you can break them down. If you need support with it then know that this is something that therapy can help with.
Taking care of ourselves means we will actually be able to take better care of others.

Our Neanderthal brains are programmed to make comparisons to those around us. In the Neanderthal world we worked in packs to hunt and gather and survive. Simply put, being at the bottom of the pack risked our survival and as a result we are programmed to noticed everything that we are not so good at as opposed to everything that we are as good, or better at. The next time you start comparing yourself notice your Neanderthal spectacles and prompt your non anxious brain to look for all the ways that you are doing enough or better at.

There’s very few things within our control, especially during the pandemic. What you do have control over is where you choose to place your energy, attention and thoughts. Whatever is going on around you, you have control over you. Pick where you put your attention wisely because we nurture and grow the things we place emphasis on. Grow the s**t that makes you feel good people!

Develop your emotional intelligence by using an emotions wheel to pick more specific terms for how you’re feeling. Emotions don’t exist to be ‘fixed’. You’re a human being and you should feel them, but there are times when we need to manage them and the more specific you get with the descriptors you pick, the better able you’ll be in managing it. For example-if you feel s**t, how do you make yourself feel less s**t?? You could talk to someone but that might only work if you’re feeling lonely. You could take control of something in you’re immediate surroundings that you can control, but that will only work if you’re feeling a sense of powerlessness. You could cut your social media views, but that might only be helpful if you’re feeling overwhelmed or envious.
You need to really know what you’re feeling if you want to limit the amount of time and the intensity that you’re feeling it.
