Birmingham Hospice is the primary provider of adult hospice care in Birmingham. We deliver expert palliative and end of life care to local people living with a terminal diagnosis - at our hospice sites, in the community and in patients' own homes. We are committed to improving the quality of life for people living with life-limiting illnesses, as well as supporting their families and loved ones. We believe that anyone with a terminal diagnosis deserves to live well and make the very most of the time that remains. We care for around 670 patients on average every day across our services. Our mission is, and always will be, to help people from all communities access the care of their choice at the end of life. We are not fully funded by the NHS or government, and we expect it to cost around £19 million to run our services this year; 42% of this must be covered through voluntary income such as fundraising activity, income from our shops and voluntary donations.

We’re proud to be joining hospices across England, Scotland, and Wales as part of Hospice UK's campaign to protect the future of hospice care.

Hospice care is everything you’d expect... And everything you wouldn’t. It’s finality and uncertainty, brave faces and shedding tears. It’s short days and long nights. Living for now with the weight of tomorrow.

But it’s also love and life and celebration. It’s going the extra mile, doing away with convention and remembering what really matters.

You can help hospice care live on for all, for now, forever.

This Children's Mental Health Week, we’re shining a light on the power of place and connection.

Birmingham Hospice’s Children’s Healing and Therapeutic Support (CHATS) Team provides confidential emotional support for young people. CHATS held their support group this week, which is a safe space for sharing thoughts, finding friendship and being heard.

The children discussed the week's theme of ‘This is My Place’ by exploring where they feel they belong.

A huge thank you to our wonderful friends at Lorne Court, who have raised an incredible £1,500 for Birmingham Hospice. 🩷

Last year the team got involved in a range of fantastic fundraising activities, including a craft fayre, bingo night and a coffee morning.

This generous donation could help fund 15 specialist bereavement support sessions for someone who has lost a loved one.

We’re so grateful to have such supportive corporate partners. Your generosity truly helps make every moment matter for those who need us most.

If your workplace would like to get involved and support Birmingham Hospice, please get in touch at fundraise@birminghamhospice.org.uk, or visit our website.

Come see what the hospice is brewing at our volunteering event!

There is still time to join us at the volunteer recruitment event tomorrow for our new Hive in the Park Cafe, which is opening soon in Rookery Park, Erdington.

Volunteering at the new cafe is a fantastic opportunity to gain new skills and experience, as well as give something back to the community. Volunteers will help in the day to day running by serving meals, using the till and being a friendly and welcoming space for our visitors.

Click on the link here to book a place at the event, which will be at our hospice site on Grange Road from 4pm 👉 https://bit.ly/4ayJeS6

Dragon Boat Race is coming to Brindleyplace this summer! 🐲

We’re thrilled that Birmingham Hospice’s Dragon Boat Race is back in June 2026 - and for the first time ever, it’s making waves at the iconic Brindleyplace canal.

This year’s event is bigger and better, running across two action packed days to welcome even more teams from across Birmingham. Get your colleagues, friends or family together and get ready to take on this exhilarating water sport challenge, all while raising vital funds for Birmingham Hospice.

Choose to take part on Friday 26 or Saturday 27 June 2026, from 10am to 4pm. There is no experience required and everything you need will be provided. Bring your cheer squad along too – as there are plenty of food and drink outlets on offer at Brindleyplace, as well as family friendly activities available throughout the day.

The event will build to an exciting grand finale each day, where the fastest teams battle it out to be crowned 2026 Birmingham Hospice Dragon Boat Race Champions.

By taking part and fundraising, you’ll be helping raise £20,000 to fund specialist palliative care for local people living with a terminal diagnosis.

Ephemera of Birmingham helps create a lasting tribute to Alice, aged 18, after this stunning bull sculpture was bought at our auction night back in October 🐂🤍

We’ve received these lovely photos from Diane, a retired hospice nurse, who was the successful bidder for Ephemera of Birmingham by Lois Cordelia at the Bulls in the City live auction.

As a big fan of the trail, Diane really wanted to purchase a sculpture as her family has a long history in Birmingham as craftspeople - but the purchase also had an even more special meaning to Diane.

She explained: “Devastatingly I lost my youngest child Alice Rose coming up to two years ago from cardiomyopathy, aged just 18. I turned our front garden into a memorial in her honour.

“On one side of the garden is a willow rose arch with an 'Alice' rose growing up it, but on the other side there was a bit of a gap - which turns out to be bull shaped!

“When I purchased him, I thought I’d put him safely in my back garden until I realised he was 10cm wider than the side passage of my house! And so, it was meant to be, as he now resides in my front garden where other people can enjoy him as well. Although he is tethered with padlocks and bike chains to stop him escaping!

“We absolutely adore him and came to his pet name Brandy from the ‘Warning’ poem by Jenny Joseph: "When I get old I will wear purple and spend my pension on brandy.”

Thank you so much to Diane for sharing Alice Rose's story with us - we're glad to have been a small part of remembering her 🩷

Today we’re highlighting one of our inspirational healthcare assistants (HCAs), Anna Hanna, whose fascinating career sparked a passion for providing palliative and end of life care.

Anna started in 2021 as part of our Hospice at Home Team, which provides expert comfort, care and compassion for those living with a terminal condition.

She has also recently joined our new Specialist Palliative Urgent Response (SPUR) service, which provides 24-hour palliative and end of life care.

But her unique journey has always put caring for people at its heart.
Anna had previously been a Catering Manager and worked at a bingo hall but developed her clinical skills as a drug intervention officer and then a clinical HCA for a GP surgery.

But it was her experience as a care home senior nursing assistant during Covid which fired her determination to work in palliative care.

She said: “I had always wanted to work in palliative care, so when I applied for a job at the hospice, I felt honoured to be given an interview and was so pleased when I got it.

“When I started it was amazing because everyone was talking the same language about caring for people and making sure people get the dignity they deserve. Everyone was pulling in the same direction and had a passion for palliative care.”
