Birmingham Hospice is the primary provider of adult hospice care in Birmingham. We deliver expert palliative and end of life care to local people living with a terminal diagnosis - at our hospice sites, in the community and in patients' own homes. We are committed to improving the quality of life for people living with life-limiting illnesses, as well as supporting their families and loved ones. We believe that anyone with a terminal diagnosis deserves to live well and make the very most of the time that remains. We care for around 670 patients on average every day across our services. Our mission is, and always will be, to help people from all communities access the care of their choice at the end of life. We are not fully funded by the NHS or government, and we expect it to cost around £19 million to run our services this year; 42% of this must be covered through voluntary income such as fundraising activity, income from our shops and voluntary donations.

Kellie Owen explains the importance of our new Specialist Palliative Urgent Response (SPUR) service, which has been providing 24/7 expert palliative and end of life care since launching in January. The service provides vital overnight support for people with a life-limiting illness and allows them to access Birmingham Hospice’s specialist care in their own home. SPUR can be used by healthcare professionals as well as patients and their families. If you or someone you know needs the SPUR service, help is available from 8am–10pm by calling HoBS on 0121 809 1900, and overnight on 0300 555 1919 (option 2).

In 2018, Fran was unexpectedly diagnosed with breast cancer after finding what she and her husband Laurence initially thought was a jellyfish sting. The cancer became secondary, and her world changed in an instant.

Thanks to the compassionate care of Birmingham Hospice, Fran was supported both at home and in the hospice’s Inpatient Unit to help manage her pain and symptoms. Their team ensured Fran could be comfortable, laugh with her nurses, and be herself – always with her wonderful sense of humour shining through. Fran’s nurses, Elizabeth and Karen, weren’t just nursing professionals, they became part of her world. Fran would tell friends how much she laughed with them, and that was so important to her. One nurse even came to the house on the day of Fran’s funeral – a small but unforgettable act of kindness that meant everything to Fran's loved ones.

When Fran’s health declined rapidly, her wish was to return home and thanks to the hospice, that wish came true. The final five days she spent at home with her husband Laurence and their beloved cat Dottie were filled with precious memories.

When you enter our Spring Raffle, you will be supporting people like Fran. Buy your tickets for £1 each today, and be in with a chance of winning £1,500: https://www.birminghamhospice.org.uk/spring-raffle/

🌼🐣 Happy Easter from Birmingham Hospice🐣🌼

Wishing everyone a peaceful and joyful Easter filled with hope, love, and time spent with those who matter most.

At this special time of year, we’re reminded of the importance of care, compassion and kindness - values that are at the heart of everything we do.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our work through donations, fundraising, volunteering or visiting our shops, which helps us provide specialist palliative and end of life care for patients and their families.

Earlier this week we were 'hoppy' to welcome our friends from Corstorphine & Wright who delivered some delicious treats for bereaved children who are being supported by our Children's Healing and Therapeutic Support (CHATS) Team to enjoy this Easter. 🐰🍫

CHATS provide confidential emotional support for children and young people when a loved one is poorly or if they have died, while also offering one-to-one sessions with children and young people to help them explore and express their feelings.

Aashna Minhas, Studio Co Ordinator at Corstorphine & Wright said: "Last year, we were proud to support CHATS and felt we made a small but meaningful difference. This Easter, we’re continuing our donation to Birmingham Hospice, hoping to bring a little more joy to the children and the incredible support team. If we can help create a few extra smiles, even for a moment, it’s all worth it."

Thank you again to all those who came together to make this beautiful donation possible.

Georgina Rudd feels more confident living with her chronic breathing condition after receiving support from Birmingham Hospice’s Fatigue, Anxiety and Breathlessness (FAB) Group.

Our Therapies Team supported Georgina, who was diagnosed with COPD in 2010, after she had experienced a bout of pneumonia at the end of last year.

She attended weekly FAB sessions in our Living Well Centre, where she learned exercises which help people take back control, improve their confidence and maintain independence.

One of her favourite parts of FAB was talking to people who share similar experiences due to their illnesses and how the Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists who run it gave her a voice to express her feelings.

She said: “The people running the group were so supportive and I am grateful to them for all the help and advice they have given me.”

You can read the full story of how our FAB Group supported Georgina here 👉 https://shorturl.at/KBvET

The FAB Group sessions are held at our Living Well Centres in Selly Park and Erdington, and you can learn more about how to be referred onto them by visiting our FAB page 👉 https://shorturl.at/SoDQp

Our supporter Jack Coldicott shares about why he’s taking on the 2026 Great Birmingham Run as well as the Brighton Marathon in memory of his mum, Kay:

“Running has become a way for me to process things and channel my energy into something positive. I’m also running the Brighton Marathon earlier in the year, and both events are part of my effort to raise funds and awareness for the hospice. It felt important to do something that challenges me personally while supporting a place that helped my mum and so many other families.

“The care my mum received from Birmingham Hospice was exceptional. What stood out most was the kindness and dignity the staff showed her every day. They didn’t just care for her medically – they cared for her as a person, and they supported our whole family through an incredibly difficult time.

“My mum had spent much of her life working as a nurse herself, caring for other people. Seeing her receive that same compassion and professionalism in her final days meant a great deal to our family.

“Two particular members of staff stand out in my mind. One nurse could see how much it meant to my mum to have her nails painted. She sat with her and carefully painted them while chatting with her, giving her that bit of normality and dignity. It might seem like a small thing, but in that moment it meant the world to my mum, and to us as a family.

“Another nurse was with us in the early hours when my mum passed away. She gently asked if we wanted her to stay in the room during those final moments. I ended up sharing stories about my mum while we sat there, and the nurse’s calm reassurance and presence made an enormous difference to how I experienced and processed that moment.

“My biggest advice for fundraising would be to tell your story. People connect with genuine reasons for why you’re fundraising, and once they understand the “why”, they really want to support you.

“Don’t be afraid to ask either. Share your fundraising page, talk about what you’re doing, and keep people updated on your progress. People enjoy feeling like they’re part of the journey.

“One thing my mum used to say was “small steps, one foot in front of the other.” when dealing with her health issues. That really applies to running. When you look at the full distance it can feel overwhelming, but if you break it down into smaller, manageable goals it becomes much more achievable. Focus on the next run, the next mile, the next step.

“Running these miles is my small way of saying thank you to the people who cared for my mum when we needed them most.”
