“The number one thing parents say is: 'If I’d known it was this busy, I might not have come.' Much of the stress families feel when they arrive in ED could be prevented with earlier advice."
Starting her career in the Emergency Department (ED) at Good Hope Hospital, Maria later became dual trained in adult and paediatric nursing. In 2022, she stepped into the newly created role of Paediatric Matron in ED at both Good Hope and Heartlands hospitals, ensuring children receive safe, high-quality care across both sites.
From managing winter surges of flu, RSV and asthma, to supporting young people with complex mental health needs, Maria leads a dedicated team who never stop putting families first. She’s also helping parents understand the many community services available, like NHS 111, GPs and pharmacists, so children get the right care, at the right time, in the right place.

Faith loves the freedom to make improvements, and says that autonomy, along with the incredible teams she works with, keeps her motivated every day.

We are a designated a Level 1 Trauma Centre and host of the UK’s only £20m National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre (SRMRC).
