Congratulations to Sinead McCann, Lead Nurse for Endoscopy who has achieved accreditation as a screener for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP). 👏

This outstanding accomplishment marks Sinead as the first Endoscopy Nurse Practitioner to gain this accreditation within the Bowel Cancer Screening service at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

On her recent accreditation Sinead said: “I am really pleased to have completed the process, thanks to the support and mentorship of an excellent team of Consultants.

“Achieving accreditation also means we have a female endoscopist for Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull screening centre for the first time, which I hope will encourage participation in the local area. This has previously been a barrier for some patients being willing to have their colonoscopy after a positive FIT test.”

Mr Sharad Karandikar, Clinical Lead for Bowel Cancer Screening, said: “We are so proud of Sinead. This is a first that not only reflects her dedication and skill but also highlights the pioneering work of our team here at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

“Sinead’s willingness to embrace the rigorous standards of national accreditation underscores our collective commitment to excellence in patient care.”💙

Today, on World Prematurity Day, we’re celebrating some of the incredible babies who began their journeys in our neonatal units and the amazing teams who cared for them.💜

Here are just a few of the extraordinary children we’re celebrating today:

👶 Ella – born at 24+4 weeks in 2022 and cared for at Heartlands during her 108-day journey. She’s now a happy, energetic chatterbox.
👶 Chloe – born at 25+5 weeks in 2016 weighing 1lb 9oz, spending 103 days on our unit. Today she’s thriving; dancing, reading, acting, swimming and learning to play the flute and piano.
👶 Amelia – born at 35 weeks in 2014. Now 11 and totally horse mad.
👶 Twins Mark and James – born at 26 weeks in 2023 and cared for during a three-month rollercoaster. Nearly 3 now and doing brilliantly.
👶 Lilly – born at 34 weeks in 2019. Turning 6 on Christmas Day and loves her teddies.
👶 Lilliana – now 9, living life to the full and even riding a bike, never letting her cerebral palsy hold her back.
👶 Callista – now 5, full of energy, mischief and curiosity. Wears bilateral hearing aids (and isn’t shy about taking them off).
👶 Ottillie – now 5 months old, here early but thriving every day.

Thank you to all our families for sharing their journeys and to our dedicated teams, whose compassion and expertise make stories like these possible.

We send our thoughts to those who have experienced the loss of a baby.

Today, BBC Midlands Today have featured our colleagues talking about the significant rise in viral respiratory infections that's already impacting services across the region. 📺

With flu, COVID 19, RSV and other seasonal bugs showing up earlier, our teams are working around the clock to protect patients and keep our hospitals running. 🦠

Here’s how YOU can help Heartlands Hospital:
✅Think before you head to A&E — if you have flu like symptoms, contact your pharmacist or NHS 111 instead of automatically coming in.
✅If you’re eligible for a flu or COVID 19 vaccine — please get it. It not only protects you but eases pressure on the NHS.
✅ Practice good hygiene: cover your coughs and sneezes, wash your hands regularly, and stay home if you’re unwell.

This World Radiology Day, let's congratulate Sarah Pickard who has graduated with a master’s degree in Radiography🎉

Sarah’s journey began over 20 years ago when, driven by a passion to work with patients, she left her bar job to work as a radiology assistant. Over the years, she was worked at both Good Hope and Heartlands Hospital, and supported to train as a qualified radiographer, then advanced practitioner, and now holds a master’s degree, continuing her journey with UHB.

Sarah shared: “I love the people I work with, and the Trust in general, for giving me the opportunity to find a career in something I absolutely love. Through my master’s degree, I’ve become even more passionate about radiology and the potential to use research to improve the lung cancer pathway process, hopefully helping to diagnosis lung cancer more quickly, and ultimately improving patient outcomes. I’m so grateful for the support to do something I enjoy so much.”

A huge thank you and well done to Sarah and all of our amazing radiography colleagues - our hero's behind the machines!đź’™

“I make it a priority to show my teams that their voices matter, that their feedback shapes real action.”

For Matron Faith Duffy, making sure staff feel heard is at the heart of her role. That’s why the staff survey is so important to her, it’s not just a form, but a chance for to listen, learn and lead change together.

Faith loves the freedom to make improvements, and says that autonomy, along with the incredible teams she works with, keeps her motivated every day.

Faith shares how it’s been quite the journey from nursery nurse to Matron and how UHB has provided opportunities she never dreamed of, but it’s the people, the passion, and the shared purpose that make it feel like home.
