Eight-month-old baby Hadley Shaw has been a patient at our hospital since he was born with a rare and complex combination of conditions - including chronic kidney disease. Since undergoing his first major surgery at just 48-hours-old, Hadley has received seven more operations at our hospital with numerous stays on our Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). It's been a long journey, not only for baby Hadley, but for his mum and dad, Tamara and Jordan, and his three older brothers too. The family live in Worcester but during Hadley's most recent stay Tamara and Jordan took it in turns to make the journey to Birmingham to be by Hadley's side, meaning they and their sons very rarely got to spend time together as a family.
That's why our charity stepped in to help the Shaw family create very special memories together with a trip to the Sea Life Centre during October Half Term, just as many other families would, and a night's hotel stay so the Shaws could spend longer together.
Hadley was fascinated by the colourful fish and his brothers giddy with excitement that they were all able to be together as a family ❤️

Meet inspirational Lilly, who was diagnosed with epilepsy when she was just 15 months old ♥

After having a tonic-clonic seizure, she was diagnosed with the condition and has since been bravely battling through life with seizures and lengthy hospital stays.

Just before her fourth birthday, Lilly was rushed to hospital and they found out she also has a cyst on her brain, which have impacted on the seizures too. She is now waiting for her VNS surgery.

After her diagnosis, her mum Laura left her job to become her full-time carer and has even written a book about Lilly and her journey with epilepsy.

She said: “Lilly has the best personality — she loves singing, dancing, and drawing, and she always manages to smile, even on her hardest days.

“Epilepsy has already had a huge impact on Lilly’s life — she sometimes can’t take part in normal childhood activities and has even been excluded from things because of her condition.

“Lilly’s courage inspires me every single day. If our story helps even one family or child feel seen, or helps one person better understand epilepsy, then it’s all been worth it."

Well done to James Stokes who has scooped a coveted national award for his dedication to our Trust.

James, Staff Engagement and Wellbeing Administrator, has won Learner of the Year in the HPMA Excellence in People Awards.

He joined our Trust as part of a government drive to secure jobs for care leavers and credits his own experience as guiding him in his job to support the wellbeing of fellow staff.

Speaking of the win, he said: “I am extremely proud to have won this award. I see it as an amazing reflection of the hard work that has been put in throughout the last couple of years, and to not only grow as a professional, but to be able to help those around me and especially the NHS Universal Family is something that I take immense pride in.

“I would like to thank my team for the nomination, as none of my work is possible without their outstanding support.”

Sometimes germs can become clever and stop medicines like antibiotics from working.
This is called antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and it makes it harder to get better from infections.
That's why it's important to only take antibiotics when they're prescribed by your doctor.

We recently celebrated National Poetry day, and to mark the occasion we welcomed Liz Berry, a Birmingham based poet and poetry teacher, to our hospital.

Liz works with our patients as part of our charity funded EnjoyArt programme and inspires them to use creative writing as a way to express themselves. On National Poetry Day itself, we shared a video of Liz, introducing an easy and fun way to start writing poetry, using a game called 'excuses' but during Liz's most recent visit, she was proud to share our new collaboration - an activity book called 'Plastic Snakes and Exploding Cakes'. The book contains 10 inspiring and playful writing activities, written by Liz, and colourful and characterful illustrations by local artist Layla Sadiq, which bring the pages to life, with lots of space for children to write their own masterpieces.

Here's Liz sharing the new booklet with 15-year-old Bella, who let her imagination go wild as they completed the creative poetry activities together.

“To say he changed our daughter’s life is an understatement.”

George and Laura Gibson’s world turned upside down after Harper was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

She was rushed to Birmingham Children’s Hospital where Consultant Paediatric Neurosurgeon Mr William Lo performed a seven-hour operation to save her life and remove the tumour.

George shared: “The news was crushing but we were so thankful to have Mr Lo there to guide us – he walked into our lives at the exact moment when we needed him."

Following surgery, Harper was diagnosed with a form of aggressive brain cancer and is now receiving chemotherapy under the hospital’s Oncology Service.

George said: “The future is uncertain, but we are determined to remain positive for Harper who is our beacon of hope.”

Laura shared: “ The whole team at B*H make the hardest days that bit easier and we’ll forever be thankful for that.”

When Julie was just two-months-old, she was diagnosed with a tumour in her windpipe and spent two years receiving lifesaving treatment at our hospital.

Pauline, Julie’s mum was so grateful for the care her daughter received, she decided to include a gift in her Will. It's a powerful way to say thank you, and to help other families facing difficult times. Julie, who made a full recovery, shared her thoughts with us about her mum’s amazing gift:
“Throughout her life, mum spoke of her love for the hospital. She wanted to help doctors and nurses carry on the brilliant work they do and to provide greater support for families of poorly children”

In her mum's footsteps, Julie has also chosen to include a gift in her Will to us.
If our hospital has played a part in your life or if you want to help do more for sick kids, a gift in your Will, will help make that future possible. Find out more here: https://orlo.uk/Mqo8O

Andy, Tech Support Manager, walked into work expecting a routine shift. Instead, he was surprised to find his colleagues gathered to celebrate his outstanding commitment to caring for patients. ❤️

He was nominated by a colleague for providing a patient and their family with an extremely positive experience despite challenging times.

Andy said: "I felt so grateful to receive the DAISY Award from my colleagues. The reason I’ve stayed in this role for so long is that the people I work with are like family and the work we do is incredibly rewarding. "

Well done Andy.
