Why it’s vital to ensure that younger children learn to wash their hands
…and keep on using soap and water effectively as they get older!

There are a number of reasons why younger children in a preschool or nursery setting are more likely to pass on germs and subsequent illnesses to each other than pretty much any other group of older kids or adults. This is precisely why they should be taught how, when and why they should be fully conversant with effective hand washing techniques, according to a recent report on the CNN Health website.

The article by Katia Hetter revealed a number of key reasons why younger children are more likely to spread bugs around so easily. They include:-

They share toys and other objects continuously
They touch their faces a lot
They can be in very close quarters with other youngsters – particularly in a school or nursery setting
They can infect each other without realising it when they have mild or non-existent symptoms
They tend to be far less proficient and diligent when it comes to basic hand hygiene.

Dr. Leana Wen is widely quoted in the report. She is an emergency physician and clinical associate professor at George Washington University – and has two young children of her own. She revealed that younger children’s “immune defenses are less experienced, making them more likely to get sick when exposed”, on the grounds that their “immune systems are still developing” – and they simply haven’t yet come into contact with the wider range of illnesses that older kids have.

The centre piece of the article focuses on a recently published article in the journal Pediatrics which covered research carried out between November 2022 to May 2023. The project involved over 800 staff members and students from a public school district in Kansas City.

Some of the researcher’s conclusions were very significant, stating

“Younger children in prekindergarten and elementary school had the highest rates of both infection and illness on average.”

Older children and adults by comparison “tested positive and fell ill less often”.
