🎮 Does your child play online games such as , or ?
We know that for many kids, these games are a digital playground where they hang out with friends and explore new worlds.
But as parents, it can feel a bit overwhelming trying to keep up with what’s happening on their screen.
It’s and we wanted to take this opportunity to share advice with parents to help you and your child navigate these worlds safely.
▶️ Help your child pick a safe username that’s fun but anonymous. No real names, school names, addresses or birthdays.
▶️ Check the privacy settings on the console or game. You can usually control who can message them or see when they’re online.
▶️ Watch out for in-game purchases and "loot boxes”. Set a password for purchases so there are no surprises on your bank statement.
🚩 Spotting the red flags
Gaming is social, but it's important children know that people aren't always who they say they are.
Talk to them about:
❗️ Reporting and muting: Teach them how to block someone who is being mean, creepy or threatening.
❗️ Keeping secrets: If a "friend" online asks them to keep a secret, send a photo, or move the chat to a different app, tell them to block the person.
❗️ Official downloads only: Remind them that "free cheats" or "mods" from random websites are often just traps for viruses.
🛑 Encourage your child to take a break if they find themselves:
😢 Getting angry or feeling upset.
😢 Skipping meals or homework.
😢 Feeling like they have to play rather than wanting to play.
You don’t need to be a gaming expert to ask "Who are you playing with today?" or "Has anything weird happened in the game lately?"
