We had another wonderful retreat at Thornby Hall this weekend.

We were guided through Buddha's precious advice on how to improve our meditative concentration by our Resident Teacher Gen Kelsang Leksang.

It was wonderful to get a taste of the peace that comes from concentration, in such a warm and welcoming environment.

Thank you to Nagarjuna Kadampa Meditation Centre for your kindness in hosting this event and thank you to everyone who was involved.

Our next away retreat takes place at Tara International Kadampa Retreat Centre 15th to 17th May 2026.
Booking now open.

Healing Body & Mind – Medicine Buddha Empowerment

Saturday 13th December 10.30am-5.15pm

With Resident Teacher Gen Kelsang Leksang

Come and receive the powerful healing blessings of Medicine Buddha and learn a special practice for healing yourself and others.

Medicine Buddha is the embodiment of the healing power of all enlightened beings.

His function is to liberate living beings from outer and inner sickness.

By relying upon Medicine Buddha, we can cure otherwise incurable physical disease and mental pain, as well as all other outer and inner diseases.

An empowerment is a guided ta***ic meditation that harnesses wisdom, imagination and the power of enlightened beings to take us to pure worlds and pure experiences.

It bestows upon us special blessings that heal our mental continuum and awaken our Buddha nature.

On this special course, Gen Kelang Leksang will grant the blessing empowerment of Medicine Buddha and transmission of the mantra, followed by teachings on how to integrate this practice into our daily lives.

Everybody welcome

Everyone wants to be happy and no one wants to suffer, but very few people understand what is the real cause of happiness and what is the real cause of suffering.

We tend to look for happiness outside ourself, thinking that if we had the right house, the right car, the right job, and the right friends that we like, we would be truly happy.

We spend almost all our time adjusting the external world, trying to make it conform to our wishes.

All our life we have tried to surround ourself with people and things that make us feel comfortable, secure or stimulated, yet still we have not found pure and lasting happiness.

Even when we succeed in fulfilling our desires, it is not long before our desires change and we want something else.

We may find the house of our dreams, but a few months later we feel that we need a bigger kitchen, an extra bedroom, or a larger garden, and we begin to think of moving.

Or perhaps we meet the ‘perfect’ partner, fall in love, and move in together. At the beginning our partner seems to be the most wonderful person in the world, but before long we begin to see faults in him or her. We discover that we are no longer in love, and soon we are looking for someone else to fulfill our desires.

Who We Are & Our Tradition

Kadampa Meditation Centre Birmingham is a member of the New Kadampa Tradition-International Kadampa Buddhist Union, a Buddhist tradition with no political affiliations that follows the pure Mahayana Buddhist teachings of Atisha (AD 982 – 1054) and Je Tsongkhapa (AD 1357 – 1419), as presented for contemporary society by modern-day Buddhist master, Geshe Kelsang Gyatso.

The New Kadampa Tradition (NKT) is an international association of Mahayana Buddhist study and meditation centres founded by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso to offer the practical wisdom of Kadampa Buddhism to the people of the modern world. The NKT follows the pure tradition of Mahayana Buddhism handed down in an unbroken lineage from Buddha Shakyamuni through the ancient Kadampa teachers Atisha and Je Tsongkhapa and introduced into the West by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. Rapidly growing, our Kadampa community is an international family, offering support, inspiration and encouragement for this joyful and profound spiritual path at centres around the world.
