Bethel Health and Healing Network

Bethel Health and Healing Network We are a support for vulnerable pregnant women and new mums, and a listening ear for everyone.

We deliver two key services: *Bethel Doula Service and Rapha Listening Service*. Our Doula team is lead by an experienced former NHS midwife and we are commissioned by the NHS to deliver services to perinatal women across Birmingham , Sandwell and Solihull. We provide provide practical and emotional support to our service users and can act as birth partners. Our Listening Service provides support for people experiencing anxiety, low mood, loneliness and so on and who need a friendly ear to help them work through their situation. It is a culturally sensitive service with some of our listeners able to speak community languages.

🎨 MESSY PLAY MADNESS AT YUMS! 🎨

Look at these gorgeous babies getting stuck in! On 26th Feb, YUMS session was all about sensory exploration - and it was BRILLIANT!

🍫 **WHAT WE MADE (ALL EDIBLE & ALLERGY-SAFE):**
βœ… Homemade playdough (each mum chose their favourite colour at home!)
βœ… Chocolate sand
βœ… Marshmallows for squishing and tasting
βœ… Chickpea foam
βœ… Ball pit fun

πŸ’œ **WHY THIS MATTERS:**

"I would never do this at home," one of our young mums told us. The mess, the cleanup, the cost of materials - it's overwhelming when you're already exhausted.

But at YUMS, we create the space and provide everything. Mums don't have to worry about the cleanup or the cost. They just get to watch their babies explore, learn, and have fun.

And while the babies played? Mums talked. Really talked.

About mum guilt. About struggling with crying babies. About feeling like they're failing when their baby won't stop crying, and they need a distraction. About feeling isolated and judged.

πŸ’› **THE YUMS DIFFERENCE:**

Last week, we discussed allergies together. Two of our babies have food allergies, so the group agreed on safe recipes everyone could use at home. That's community. That's support. That's YUMS.

Every Monday, young mums show up feeling anxious, isolated, or overwhelmed. And every Monday, they leave knowing: *You're not alone. You're doing amazing. We've got you.*

πŸ“… **JOIN US EVERY MONDAY!**

πŸ’• YUMS Love Bug Crafts: Tiny Footprints, BIG Impact πŸ’•

Today at our Young Mums (YUMS) session, we created these adorable Valentine's love bugs using baby footprints! Look at those tiny toes! 🐞❀️

WHAT IS YUMS?

Our Young and Teenage Mums Project runs in Solihull & Chelmsley Wood Family Hubs. We support young mothers who are pregnant or have babies through:
βœ… Peer support & friendship building
βœ… Expert advice (midwives, contraception/sexual health clinic, breastfeeding support)
βœ… Practical skills (baby massage, safe sleeping, healthy relationships)
βœ… Craft activities & social connection
βœ… Career/aspiration guidance
βœ… Financial support advice

WHY IT MATTERS:

Many young mums tell us they feel isolated and scared to reach out. YUMS creates a safe, non-judgmental space where they can:
- Get out of the house
- Meet other mums who understand
- Watch their babies develop through interaction with other children
- Ask questions and get support
- Build real friendships

As one mum shared: "Me and H first met at the YUMS club and are now planning to take our babies out together, but we was both too scared to meet at first."

These love bug crafts? They're keepsakes. But the friendships, confidence, and support? That's what changes lives.

Behind every birth, every listening session, every community visit, there's a woman who showed up.

These are the women of Bethel. πŸ’œ And today, on International Women's Day, we celebrate them and every volunteer, birth partner, Rapha listener, and health champion who gives their time and heart to support women across Birmingham.

We also celebrate you, the women who trust us to walk alongside you. You are why we do this.
Nearly 20 years of women, for women. Here's to many more. 🌸

Proud to work alongside every single one of these women every day. Happy Women's Day πŸ’œ -Shree

πŸ’ THANK YOU, ALISON! πŸ’

Today we celebrated an incredible volunteer who has transformed lives through our Rapha Group Wellbeing Sessions.

✨ ALISON'S IMPACT (JUNE 2025 - JANUARY 2026):
- 8 Group Wellbeing Sessions delivered
- Multiple themes and topics covered
- Consistently rated 10/10 by participants
- Clients gained self-confidence
- Reduced isolation and loneliness
- Improved mental health management skills
- Created a "family feel" where everyone feels loved, respected, and unjudged

What makes Alison exceptional? It's not just her knowledge; it's how she made every single person feel seen, heard, and valued. Some clients started attending occasionally and now come regularly because of the safe space she created.

"She helped create a family feel to these sessions. Clients feel loved, respected and not judged in any way and are able to use their voice."

Alison has been a credit to these sessions and the journey each individual has been on. While we'll miss her presence, we wish her all the best in her next chapter!

πŸ’œ THE SESSIONS CONTINUE!
Rapha's Group Wellbeing Sessions are ongoing and continue making a difference in our Birmingham community. If you or someone you know could benefit from mental health support in a warm, welcoming group setting, we'd love to have you join us.

πŸ‘‰ Comment "INFO" or message us to learn more about upcoming sessions.

Thank you, Alison, for showing us what compassionate community support looks like. πŸ’›

✨ Building a Community of Listeners ✨

These are the faces of compassion. Our latest group of Rapha Listening volunteers completed their training, and they're ready to make a real difference in Birmingham.

Every year, we support people experiencing low mood, anxiety, and depression - many on long NHS waiting lists who need someone NOW. Our trained listeners offer what seems simple but is so powerful: a safe, non-judgmental space to be heard.

πŸ“ž This year alone: 94 people supported | 376 listening sessions | 236 hours of compassionate support

πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈ WE ESPECIALLY NEED MALE VOLUNTEERS
Many men tell us they feel more comfortable talking to other men - but we need more male listeners to meet this need.

πŸ’œ COULD YOU GIVE 1 HOUR A WEEK?
βœ… Training provided (2 Zoom sessions)
βœ… Flexible, remote support
βœ… Full support & supervision
βœ… Mobile phone provided
βœ… Make a real difference in someone's mental health journey

Yesterday was a brilliant day at Bethel! 🌟

We were joined by 10 incredible midwifery students from Birmingham City University who volunteered their time to organise Bethel Baby Bank.

The students worked tirelessly throughout the day, sorting donated baby clothes by age and size, organising nappies and essential items, and ensuring everything is ready for families who need support.

What made this day special:
- Hands-on community partnership with BCU
- Future midwives connecting with community support services
- Hundreds of items organised for local families
- The energy and dedication these students brought to the work

This is the power of community in action. When students, universities, and charities work together, we create real change for families across West Birmingham.

If you're interested in volunteering with Bethel, we have regular opportunities available. Visit our website https://bethelnetwork.org.uk/make-a-difference/ or message us to find out more.

A huge thank you to Birmingham City University and every student who gave their Wednesday to make a difference! πŸ’œ

It was brilliant to welcome 18 attendees from a wide range of backgrounds and interests. Everyone shared the same goal: to grow in confidence, build skills for their CV, and give back to the community by volunteering with our Rapha Listening Service and Doula Service.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us β€” we’re excited for what’s ahead in 2025.

Our story

We are an award winning charity that started in 2006.Our mission is to enable the people of Birmingham, particularly focusing on the most vulnerable, to become physically, emotionally, and spiritually healthy. We are currently running two services with plans for so much more.

Bethel Doula Service

Here we provide support for vulnerable, isolated and pregnant women. This will include emotional and physical help during maternity (ante natal and post natal)

We have worked with over 300 women and their families to date and reached out to many groups and individuals who want to support us.
