If you are sitting on the floor, whether that be cross-legged or kneeling, make sure that you have a firm base, by ensuring that you have enough cushions beneath you. Initially practising on the floor may be uncomfortable if you are not used to this way of sitting.

If you are sitting on a chair, make sure your feet are on the floor, with your shoulders loose, and your back relatively straight, while at the same time relaxed and not too tense.

If you are practising at home, choose an area that you can sit in regularly each day so that space starts to become your personal, mindful zendo (a place set aside within the Zen temples of Japan for meditation).
