Bonfire night can be a very confusing and frightening evening for older people, particularly those with dementia or war veterans who are sensitive to loud noises and flashes.

There's a number of things you can do to support an elderly relative, friend or neighbour:

🎆 Make sure to check in on them regularly over the next couple of days.

🎇 Try not to leave someone with dementia alone, be there to provide comfort and reassurance.

🎆 Try and distract them or reduce noise by keeping windows and doors closed. Turn the radio or TV up high.

🎇 Close the curtains and blinds early to protect them from the flashes before they start.

🎆 If you are taking them out to a display, make sure they're wrapped up warm and leave early if they get startled.

If you don't get an answer after one knock, please move onto the next house as some people may be frightened or unable to answer the door due to mobility issues.
