REDUCE RISK FOR DISKS
Disk problems in the lower back are a distressing and disabling cause of back pain and ‘trapped nerve’ or ‘sciatica’ pain - cases that we see almost every day in our clinic. New research sheds light on risk factors that increase likelihood of somebody developing this condition. It is more likely to affect people age 30-50. We can’t do much about that, but in contrast, some other risk factors can be modified:

Weight (higher BMI increases risk)
Smoking (increases risk)
Occupations with a lot of forwards bending, or manual materials handling (increases risk)
Cardiovascular risk factors, such as high cholesterol (increase risk in women).

This is why, as well as assessing and managing symptoms, we ask patients questions about weight, smoking and work activities and might give advice or signpost you to other professionals who can help.

I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Associate Professor, Head of Chiropractic Curriculum at the School of Science, Coventry University! Excited to join the School of Science and to take on this great challenge of developing the new Master of Chiropractic (MChiro) degree programme for its first intake in 2026. I will still be in clinic to carry on taking care of my patients part time.
