Another trip to Wales, followed by Estonia. I will be out of the clinic for the next couple of weeks whilst I am away with the Wales Women’s senior squad. Fixtures against Kazakhstan and Estonia pose great opportunities to pick up some points on the journey to qualify for the 2023 World Cup. Come on Ladies!!

As I am away, the next availability for appointments will be in early October. I will still be receiving emails and will reply as soon as possible.

Good day one and all.

Just a little update that the session fee prices will be increasing as of June 1st 2021. This is to bring pricing closer in line with the competition in the area and to address the increased costs associated with managing a healthcare clinic during COVID times (such as costing of PPE, which doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon). Rest assured, Mindfully Active Physio remain one of the best value for money clinics in the area.

The pricing structure for sessions, as of 1st June 2021, will be as follows:

Initial Physiotherapy Consultation (typically lasting around 75mins) - £67.50

Extended Follow-Up Consultation (typically lasting around 60mins) - £60.00

Follow-Up Consultation (typically lasting around 30mins) - £45.00

Have a great day. 👍

Good morning one and all,

Another day, another article review for all you deadlifters. This compares the differences in muscle activation during a conventional, straight barbell deadlift and a hexagonal barbell deadlift.

These findings can have some positive implications for your training. For example, if you suffer with a grumbling lower back, it may be prudent to bias a hexagonal barbell deadlift in order to reduce the load throughout the back. However, if you are looking to development strength through the lower back and hamstrings, a straight barbell deadlift may be for you.

It can also be argued that if power and force development are your aims, a hexagonal barbell may serve you better.

It is important to note that with all exercises, deadlift variations will be better tolerated by some than others. Therefore, if you have any questions or concerns about this article, feel free to reach out at sayhello@maphysio.co.uk.

Have a great day.

Good day one and all,

With the first week back in the gym coming to an end, here is a little snippet for all of you lifters, which provides some insight into injury rates in weightlifting and powerlifting.

This review identified that weightlifting and powerlifting have similar injury rates as many non-contact sports, and reduced likelihood of sustaining an injury compared to many contact sports.

The shoulder, lower back and knee were the most commonly injured areas in weightlifting and powerlifting, with slight biases between the two. For example, the shoulder was more likely to be injured in powerlifting compared to weightlifting. It is theorised that this is due to the heavy loads, wide grips and awkward shoulder positions found in the bench press of powerlifting.

If you have recently returned to the gym and have an ongoing injury that you would like to get on top of, reach out at sayhello@maphysio.co.uk or call 07969299594 to see how we can help you.

As we say goodbye to this year's Masters, here is an interesting article for all of those golfers keen to get back on the greens.

Lower back pain has been found to be the most prevalent injury amongst golfers, and this review paper looks into possible correlating reasons as to why. It was found that increased age and body mass positively correlate with an increased likelihood of developing lower back pain. Interestingly, swing mechanics did not seem to matter.

Whilst we cannot alter our age, my take-home message from this study is that we should manage the variables that we can. For example, slowly building back into golf (such as initially hitting a few balls at the range rather than going straight into a full 18 holes), as well as performing a dynamic warm-up can help reduce the risk of injury.
