The new IYUK website is up and running! Here you can see all my current classes, both in-person and online, along with all the details about timings and how to join.

My classes are suitable for beginners as well as more experienced students. Everyone is welcome to join – please get in contact if you have more questions about Iyengar Yoga or starting yoga classes in general. If you are more experienced in yoga, the classes will still be beneficial since I teach a broad range of poses. I teach a variation of poses and sequences every week, focusing on different areas of the body or a different class of asanas. In my Yoga classes, I focus on the core principles of Yoga, rather than a picture-perfect Instagram pose. We use Iyengar props when needed. I focus principally on asana work. Only with that hard work will the relaxation at the end of the class come easily, meaning you will start to feel the mental benefits of a Yoga practise.

TEACHER SPOTLIGHT 💫
SHARON WHITELEY
I first started Yoga when I was pregnant with my daughter who is now almost 23 and practises Yoga herself. I tried various Yogas but the one I felt most at home with was Iyengar. I adore the fact that even as a Yoga teacher you still continue to learn and discover more about Yoga. It is good for the body, brain and mind and it’s a journey that never ends!
It’s a privilege that I have been able to make Yoga my vocation and impart what I know and continue to learn to my wonderful students. Although I absorb knowledge from my Senior Teachers I also learn much from my students.I love teaching and Iyengar Yoga so I am very lucky to be able to combine the two!

Here is a good post from Ballarat Iyengar Yoga on standing poses!

In the beginning, can be tricky to master. One of the areas of difficulty for new practitioners is to keep the back leg straight, especially in poses like parsvakonasana and virabhadrasana I.

Sometimes this is due to lack of strength in the legs or lack of flexibility in the hips but most often it is due to a lack of awareness. The student is not aware of what the limbs (arms and legs) are doing.

The movements of the standing poses bring awareness to the different parts of the body. Students learn to feel the arms and legs, front and back of the trunk, the shoulders, neck and head.

Students often say that by coming to yoga they really learn to feel and be aware of their own body.

Once awareness begins to develop (and it can develop quite quickly), then some ease comes and mastery of the poses begins.

Here is an article that could help with your forward bending from Ballarat Iyengar Yoga.

For the Sunday Review, have a look at this 2007 Q&A article from the US version of the Yoga Journal. It is written by Roger Cole, an Iyengar yoga teacher. It might explain a few things for the people who think they have tight hamstrings.
