Today is World Osteoporosis Day, and the perfect time to ask yourself: What do you know about Osteoporosis?⁠

📚Osteoporosis comes from "osteo" meaning bone and the greek word “por” (passage), simply put, means porous bone. It is a progressive condition in which the bones density decreases and puts the patient at increased risk of fractures. ⁠

Despite affecting over 500 million people worldwide, osteoporosis remains severely underdiagnosed and undertreated.

Interesting facts:
✨ Women are almost twice as likely to develop the condition (Balch, Balch 1997)⁠
✨ 1 in 4 women over the age of 50 has osteoporosis (Osteoporosis Society of Canada, 1997)⁠

Contraindications⁠
➡️ Flexion exercises
➡️ Over pressure testing
➡️ Joint mobilisation techniques / joint play ⁠

Symptoms⁠
➡️ Many patients do not realise they have had Osteoporosis for many years ⁠
➡️ Patients may only become aware after they have suffered a fracture ⁠
➡️ Periodic acute thoracolumbar Pp may be present ⁠

Treatment options ⁠
👉 Positioning - key factor is client comfort and support ⁠
👉 Rx should aim to be relaxing ⁠
👉 Diaphragmatic breathing techniques would be encouraged ⁠
👉 Techniques - modifications to pressure and intensity of Rx techniques ⁠

Treatment will not help bone density but it can play an important role in alleviating associated problems. ⁠
