FAQs β Change in Bank Hourly Rates (Agenda for Change)
Q: When will the new rates take effect?
A: The revised bank pay rates will be implemented from 31st October 2025.
Q: Will the rates for existing bookings be honoured?
A: Shifts worked up to and including 30th October 2025 will be paid at the current rate. Shifts worked on or after 31st October 2025, regardless of booking date, will be paid at the new rate.
Q: Why are bank rates being changed?
A: A temporary increase bank rates were introduced to support staffing during high-demand periods. As staffing levels have improved, the Trust is aligning rates for consistency, fairness, and equality across all Bands and roles within the Lancashire and South Cumbria system.
Q: What are the new pay arrangements?
A: - Bank-only staff (Bands 5 and above): Paid at the midpoint of their band.
- Bank-only staff (Bands 3 and 4): Paid at the top of their band.
- Band 2 staff: No change (only one pay point).
- Substantive staff working bank shifts: Paid at their substantive pay point
- Shifts worked at a lower band than substantive will be paid at the top of the lower band.
Q: Will enhancements (e.g., nights, weekends) still apply?
A: Yes, unsocial hours enhancements will continue to apply in line with Agenda for Change, calculated using the new pay arrangements.
Q: Will this affect my ability to pick up shifts?
A: No. You can continue to book shifts as usual.
Q: What happens if my bank post is a lower band than my substantive post?
A: You will be paid at the top point of the lower band requested for those shifts worked.
Q: What if I retire from my substantive role but keep my bank post?
A: You will be paid at the relevant bank-only rate for your band.
Q: Will this affect my pension or tax status?
A: Bank work remains subject to standard NHS pension and tax rules. For specific queries, contact Payroll or Pensions.
Q: How will I know what my new hourly rate is?
A: Please see table below
Q: Will I receive confirmation of the new rate when I book a shift?
A: Shift confirmations will reflect the applicable rate based on the date worked and your banding.
Q: Can I cancel shifts Iβve already booked if Iβm unhappy with the new rate?
A: Yes, but please follow the Trustβs cancellation policy and provide adequate notice to ensure patient safety.
Q: Will this change affect staffing levels or shift availability?
A: The Trust is committed to maintaining safe staffing levels. This change is part of a broader strategy to ensure sustainability and equity.
Q: Will there be a review of the new rates in the future?
A: Yes, bank pay rates are subject to periodic review in line with workforce needs and system-wide agreements.
