🥴 Worried about nap refusals?

I cannot tell you how many parents I've spoken to who experience or have experienced nap refusals..!

It's frustrating. It really is. That one time of the day where you can crack on and get things done, or finally sit down and breath. Especially if it's your reset of calm and quiet that you rely on, ready for the next part of the day.
So..

💡 Let's get curious.
What are they trying to tell you?

Here are some options:

👶🏼 I'm not tired enough/I'm too tired.
Both can trigger sleep resistance. It might be time to tweak a nap, whether that's dropping a nap, adding a nap, or capping a nap.

👶🏼 I'm learning a new skill and want to practice it!

👶🏼 I need you.
Separation anxiety. Or FOMO might've come into play. Both can make them unhappy with the prospect of going to sleep.

👶🏼 There's a lot going on for me.
Similarly to us, big changes or changes in routine can cause sleep disruption for them too.
They might need a chance to adjust.

🌥 For toddlers, it can be a phase that they go through, it might be that they do still need a nap, and will ease back into it with consistency and a little time. Just because they're resisting naps, doesn't necessarily mean it's time to drop them completely.

🌤 Try for just 15 minutes or so to get them to sleep. If it's just not happening, then calmly bring them out of the room, reset and try again in a little bit.

Know that this phase will pass, as they always do. But if you're struggling, or just want to get to the bottom of it - then send me a DM, my inbox is always open.

💤 For some, it might feel like your little one's temperament dictates the bedtime story.

For others, they've not even considered temperament yet. Maybe you're in the depths of sleep deprivation, or maybe it's just not come up yet.

What's not talked about nearly enough, is that each child brings their ✨unique temperament✨ to the mix not only when it comes to sleep, but their day to day experience of the world too.

🙅🏼‍♀️ Learning about temperaments, and what they can mean for your little one's sleep, can go a long way to making things 'click' and feel more manageable.

🦔 This is a really important post to take a little time to read, and to share with others 💬

😬 What happens if we bypass their ideal wake window?!

Well, they might get dysregulated or overtired.
Equally, they might handle it perfectly ok..!

Biologically, our response to being overtired is the release of cortisol (the stress hormone) and adrenaline. Don’t worry, these things happen and it’s not the end of the world. But it might make it a bit harder to get your little one down to sleep.

Take a look at the post for my suggestions to help you regain calm when it feels like chaos.

💌 Save this to come back to!

😮‍💨 Having a hard day with your little one?

➡️ Bring it back to LOVE and CONNECTION. ⁣

💜 Sit with them, hug them, be with them.. You have the power to co-regulate with them. To help them find their calm.

❤️ Fill up that love tank.

✨ Then once they are no longer in an emotional state, you can calmly talk it through together.

🍃 Sometimes, it’s the days that children are behaving the worst, that they actually need the most love..

⚠️ I’ve seen some scary sleep setups I’ve seen over the years.

🤗 Now I know nobody wants to put their baby in a dangerous situation, so I’m going to assume we just need to KEEP pushing this information out there!

👉🏼 You need to know that the risk of SIDS is still significant beyond 6 months old, so please don’t start getting too comfortable and casual about the sleep space.

The good news is, you can significantly reduce the chance of SIDS by following safer sleep advice.

🌙 Lie baby on their back at the foot of the cot
🌙 Keep the cot clear
🌙 Use a firm, flat, waterproof mattress
🌙 Keep baby well away from any smoking
🌙 Avoid letting baby getting too hot
🌙 Never sleep on a sofa or armchair with your baby - it can increase the risk of SIDS by 50 times
🌙 Baby should sleep in the same room as you for at least the first 6 months

For all things safe sleep, head to for trustworthy, up to date safe sleep advice.

👉🏻 HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU HEARD A TODDLER SAY “I’VE HAD A HARD DAY, CAN WE TALK?”

You haven’t..

🧠 As I’m sure you know, that’s because their brains haven’t reached that level of emotional intelligence yet, and their communication skills are still super basic and developing.

But what do we see?
We see toddlers communicating ✨ through their behaviour ✨ throughout every single day.

🪄 Get curious!
What is their behaviour communicating to you?

🫶🏼 Maybe they need to hear something like ‘I hear you, and I can see you’re feeling sad.’ or ‘I know it’s hard, you’re doing so well.’ AND maybe they need a ginormous cuddle.

🫶🏼 Acknowledging feelings can go a long way - AND supports their emotional development brilliantly.

🫶🏼 You might even find saying these things out loud helps ~you~ to find that little bit more empathy through the fogginess and frustration.

If you need support, you know where to find me.
