My story

I have been enjoying the outdoors since the age of 10, when I first summited Ben Nevis courtesy of my Dad. I have rock climbed, walked and summited mountains in the French, Austrian and Italian Alps, Skye, the Highlands, Snowdonia, Lake District, Cyprus, Hawaii and Israel, including full winter conditions and some ice climbing. My ambitions are to complete the Cuilin Ridge and summit the highest peak of every recognised range of hills or mountains in Great Britain!

I started my outdoor career coaching kayaking at Hamworthy Outdoor Education Centre on the stunning Poole Harbour back in the 1990s. This led onto sailing, climbing, orienteering and all sorts of fun things (like level 5 powerboat!), however I blame my Dad for my love of the mountains! A degree in Geology from Durham kept me outdoor entertained while studying.

From the age of 13, my main sport has been white water kayaking and I have regularly paddled in the Northern and Southern Alps, Norway, Scotland, Slovenia, Wales and England up to Grade 4 with an occasional 5! My ambition is to paddle the Fairy Glen. I competed at K1 slalom in the 1990s reaching Division 3 and won several fastest under 18 trophies and have also dabbled in marathon paddling. In 1990 I won the National Championships with Poole Harbour Canoe Club Dragon Boat Racing Team in Cardiff.

A short sojourn into the North Sea gas industry (OK, so it was nearly 20 years!) added the experiences (including helicopter water crash training and crewing in the Energy Regatta - part of Cowes Week on a Benetau 40, and company first aider) of an international leadership and coaching career (I coached project management all over Europe) and Level 5 Diplomas in Coaching & Mentoring and Management & Leadership. I spent a lot of summers walking and kayaking in the Alps in these years, and winters back in the Lakes and Wales.
