This week is Children’s Mental Health Week and the theme is ‘Express Yourself’. This begs the question, could communication skills and mental health difficulties be linked? Research shows children with speech, language, and communication needs are at increased risk of developing mental health needs, and up to 45% of young people referred for mental health services have communication difficulties. Children with difficulties understanding and using language may struggle to identify and express their emotions, establish successful and meaningful interactions with their peers, and to access the curriculum. It is not surprising that these children often face difficulties with social acceptance and bullying and experience high levels of frustration and anxiety. By supporting our children with their communication skills, we are helping to protect them against mental health difficulties in the future.

Have you heard about our new Let’s Talk online courses? Our popular Let’s Talk with Under 5s and Let’s Talk with Special Children courses for parents, carers, childminders, and pre-school practitioners are now available as interactive online learning so you can access practical ideas to help children learn to listen, understand and talk from the comfort of your home. EARLY BIRD RATES AVAILABLE UNTIL 1ST JANUARY 2021 – don’t miss out!

Here’s what some of our learners had to say: I’ve learnt the only way for children to learn is through play and having fun. I’ve also learned not to push my child to learn, he’ll do it in his own time, just to practice and model…..Going on this was the best thing ever”

“I have found the course really useful. I am now having more structured play with X, we are also chatting about everyday things much more. I found modelling works well for both my children. The course is great”

“The course is very good and informative, it has really helped me and given me more confidence in helping my daughter to learn to talk”

Avoid disappointment and book your place now! Please click on the link below or contact Clare for more information on clare@elklan.co.uk.

Word Maps are a fantastic tool to help students learn words by investigating meaning and sound structure. Features of words are shown through images as well as text and colour is used to highlight the aspects of meaning or sound.

Here are some examples from learners on a 5-11s course. Can you guess which words they are describing from the clues that are given?

As well as supporting learning of new vocabulary, word maps are can also be adapted to re-cap words in a fun and engaging way!

More information can be found on our website www.elkan.co.uk or contact Clare at clare@elklan.co.uk if you have any questions.
