Staying Sun Safe

We’re all glad to see the sun after such a wet start to the year, but ultraviolet (UV) light/rays can be harmful. Here are some simple ways to stay protected:
• Eye protection - Protect your eyes with sunglasses, eye shields or a peaked hat. Make sure your sunglasses or eye shields are marked “UV400” or “100% UV protection”, and look for the CE mark or British Standard for full protection.
• Keep covered - Use sun cream and wear loose clothing to shield your skin from UV rays. Roller ball sun creams are available and can be easier for people with sight loss, offering better control and helping ensure even coverage.
• Stay hydrated - Drink plenty of water. In summer, 2-3 litres (8-12 glasses) a day can help you stay refreshed and energised.

If you struggle with glare from sunlight or bright lights, we offer a range of daily living aids - including anti-glare and ultraviolet shields - to help you make the most of your remaining vision. For more information, or to try any of our products, please contact us.

There are two more bank holidays coming up, which can affect local pharmacy and GP opening times.

The NHS are encouraging Sussex residents to put a spring in their step by making sure they’re prepared to manage any health concerns which may arise.

Any essential medications which are due to run out before or during the long weekend should be reordered in good time. GP practices may need at least three working days to process repeat prescriptions and pharmacies may not always be able to dispense medications on the spot, depending on how busy they are. The NHS App makes it quick and easy to request repeat medications at any time.

With pharmacies offering reduced opening hours, local people can search 'find a pharmacy' to find one that's open nearby or visit the NHS England website for a list of bank holiday pharmacy opening hours and a handy map of where they are located.

While GP surgeries are closed, people are encouraged to treat minor illnesses, such as coughs, colds, and upset stomachs, at home, using advice and over-the-counter remedies. It’s a good idea to stock up on essentials for a home first aid kit and medicine cabinet such as painkillers, indigestion remedies and hay fever tablets.

Local Urgent Treatment Centres (UTCs), Minor Injury Units (MIUs), and walk-in centres will also be open over the Bank Holiday. These services can often treat conditions more quickly than busy A&E departments.

If anyone is unsure where to go, NHS 111 is available online, by phone or through the NHS App for 24/7 health advice.

Accessible Tennis

Bright Ideas Tennis is a nationwide charity supporting people with disabilities, including those with sight loss. They are launching a new group in the Storrington area, starting with a taster session on Tuesday 28th April at 2pm. Spaces may be limited – email danny@brightideasfortennis.org for details.

How does it work?
Players use soft sponge balls with bells inside, allowing the ball to be tracked by sound. Carers and helpers are welcome. It’s a great chance to stay active, have fun and meet new people.

If you’d like information about other leisure activities in your area, please contact us.
