4Sight Vision Support

4Sight Vision Support For over 100 years, we have supported blind and sight impaired people across West Sussex. Whoever they are, whatever they do, wherever they find themselves.

4Sight Vision Support was established in 1921 to support blind and partially sighted people in West Sussex. We now support over 2,000 members and provide over 5,000 people with a wide range of practical support solutions to help them remain independent following sight loss. Our main aim at 4Sight Vision Support is to improve the lives of blind and partially sighted people with sight loss. We support in many different ways though services, visits, information, guidance, advocacy and support. Our aims are to enable people to:

Adjust to sight loss
Make the best use of low vision
Combat social isolation
Access appropriate information and advice
Maintain independence
Participate actively in their communities and family life
Access facilities and open spaces, across town and country
Access high quality personal social care and clinical services, with appropriate and timely choices

The Government has announced plans to introduce mandatory sight tests for drivers over the age of 70.

The plans are part of the Department for Transport’s new road safety strategy which aims to reduce deaths and serious injuries on Britain’s roads by 65% by 2035.

The College of Optometrists and the Association of Optometrists have long called for changes to the law to help improve road safety.

They have repeatedly called for reforms to UK driving law, including requiring all drivers to provide evidence of a recent eye test at initial licence application and at every renewal – every 10 years and then every three years from age 70. They have also called for increased public awareness of the importance of regular eye tests every two years or as advised by your optometrist, to ensure drivers continue to meet driving standards.

The government are currently seeking views on the proposals to introduce mandatory eyesight testing for older drivers in Great Britain.
Visit the gov.uk website to download a form or complete online with the link below.

Forms need to be submitted before 31st March 2026

If you or someone you know is living with sight loss and needs support, please contact us to find out what services are available to you. Below is a continuation of our client’s story, following the fundraising mailing we sent out last week.

When our client, aged 44, was in his late 30’s, the sight condition he had always lived with changed. A haze descended, “like looking through a frosted window” and his retina in his right eye detached. In and amongst many appointments, referrals, and despite multiple surgeries, his sight deteriorated, and he faced many challenges. He ended up losing his job, his family dynamic changed, and he had to move.

Scared, anxious and confused, our client’s brother helped him contact local organisations, leading him to us. Organising and travelling to meet our Vision Support Advisor felt impossible. “It honestly felt like travelling to the moon”. In a quiet meeting room, similar to the corporate environments he had once known, our client felt relieved to have arrived, but wasn’t expecting to gain much and certainly wasn’t expecting what happened next.

If you’d like to read more of our client’s story, please visit our website www.4Sight.org.uk, or continue following us on social media for more.

We had a lovely visit last week with Charlie from the Thomas Pocklington Trust , as part of their Get Set Progress internship programme!

It was a great chance to share how our Fundraising Intern, Philip, is getting on and to celebrate the brilliant contribution they’re already making to the team. We’re so proud to be part of a scheme that helps blind and partially sighted people build skills, grow in confidence, and take those next steps in their careers.

A big thank you to TPT for their continued support – and to Philip for bringing so much enthusiasm to everything he’s doing!

From all of us at 4Sight Vision Support, Happy Valentines Day! We hope you have received your letter and enjoy the beautiful story our client has shared with us.

Our client, aged 44, has always had an eye condition. Growing up he had “bottle glasses” and his mum was always telling him “Don’t sit so close to the TV, your eyes will go square!” Regular visits to the opticians were the norm.

As an adult, working in London and travelling the world as an international salesperson, his condition was being regularly monitored, until it changed. He was referred for further testing and diagnosed with Glaucoma, prescribed eye drops and was able to continue working full time in his role, continuing daily life as normal. Then it changed again.
