What do we miss seeing in our children?
Do you know the invisible gorilla awareness test recorder by Daniel Simons and Christopher Chabris?
You might want to take the original test before continuing.

How was your experience with it?
It is a compelling evidence that we don’t see what is in front of us if it doesn’t fit with our expectations.
So, explore these questions:
Do you truly see your child?
How do you really perceive your own child?
What do you miss seeing in your child?
Have you noticed any patterns, beliefs or expectations that hinder you seeing your child non-judgementally?

How to Parent with a Beginner’s Mind
Beginner's mind parenting is an approach that involves seeing your child and their experiences with a sense of curiosity and freshness, free from biases, expectations, or past judgments. It means approaching each day and interaction as a new experience, observing your child without labels, and learning to be a beginner alongside them.
Consider this example: Your 15-year-old child is failing English, which is difficult for you because you have always been good at it.
There are two ways you might respond. For instance:
1. ‘What is going on with your English? Don’t you see you need to work harder? I am going to organise a tutor!’
2. ‘I am a bit surprised by your English result. How can I help you?’
The second response is much more open, inclusive and non-judgmental. There is space for the child to be seen, heard, and valued.
A beginner’s mind can be an incredibly powerful tool to maintain a healthy relationship with your child. To get started, try to:
• Start with the intention of learning something new about your child.
• Listen to them deeply and hold back ‘fix-it ‘ responses if they express a worry or behave differently.
• Be curious and non-judgmental. This will allow your child to connect with how they feel and find the words to explain their experience.

Why is parenting stressful?
Parenting is stressful because of the enormous resources required to raise a baby to maturity. It demands time, energy and responsibilities such as financial provision and child safety. The child’s emotional development requires substantial emotional effort as there is a constant need to handle the child's tantrums and misbehaviours. Parents are also faced with modern pressures such as the complexity of social media, managing uncertainty about the future, and a growing problem with parental isolation.

How can mindfulness help?
Acknowledging, creative responding than reacting and self-kindness

Acknowledging:
Awareness and acceptance of parental stress.
Exploration of these questions:
How can I support myself? versus what’s wrong with me?
What do I need? versus why can’t I cope with this?

Creative Responding than Reacting
Slowing things down, stepping back, and observing your own reactions. This can give you the perspective to effectively reduce stress around things like the morning routine, homework and other situations.
Exploration of this question:
What is kinder and discerned way of approaching my child’s behaviour versus why did I lose it again and shout at him/her?

Self-kindness:
Exploration of this question:
How can I be my own best friend to support myself and my child? versus why am I such a bad parent?

What exactly is mindful parenting?
Professor Jon Kabat-Zinn defines mindfulness as the awareness that comes from ‘paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally.’ Unsurprisingly, mindful parenting takes those principles and applies them to how you parent.

How can I be a mindful parent?
The basic principles of mindful parenting are:

listening to your child with your full attention
non-judgementally accepting yourself and your child
being emotionally aware of yourself and your child
using self-regulation in your relationship with your child
having compassion for yourself and your child.
