What is Phonics Screening?

If you have a child in Year 1, you may have heard them talking about real words and alien words, so what does that mean?

In Year 1, children take part in a Phonics Screening Check. The purpose of the check is to see how well children are learning to read using phonics- where children link letters with their sounds, and blend those sounds together to read words

During the check, each child is asked to read 40 words aloud to their teacher. Some of these are real words, and some are made-up (nonsense or alien) words. The made-up words help teachers see whether children can use their phonics skills to decode unfamiliar words, rather than simply recognising words they have memorised.

What is the MTC?

The Multiplication Tables Check is a short online assessment taken by children in Year 4 across England. It helps schools check how confident children are with their times tables.

What does the check involve?

✔ Children answer 25 times table questions
✔ Each question has 6 seconds to answer
✔ It is completed online in school
✔ The test usually takes around 5 minutes
✔ It focuses on times tables up to 12 × 12

Why is it important?

Knowing times tables helps children with many areas of maths, including:

⭐ Fractions
⭐ Division
⭐ Problem solving
⭐ Written maths methods
⭐ Maths confidence in general

Strong times table knowledge supports children throughout KS2 and beyond.

How can children feel about it?

Children can sometimes feel pressurised because of the timed nature of the check. Some children may feel nervous or lose confidence if they find recall difficult.

The most important thing is helping children feel:
✔ Calm
✔ Confident
✔ Positive about maths
✔ Supported while learning
