We are and continue to Break Barriers.
A young female came to us after a viscious assault.
She doesn’t speak English as a first language and initially stayed in her room.
She kept trying to use google translate, but there are limitations to this as there aren’t words in their respective tongue to be able to make it clear or specific in translation.
Another young person who left one of our projects, kindly donated some items she didn’t want to take with her. A member of staff put a note on the box of donations saying “help yourself” (in 3 different languages).
The young lady was able to help herself to some of these donations and after some translating, it transpired all she wanted was some specific, inexpensive cooking utensils so she could make and prepare food in a cultural way.
These were then purchased for her out of money donated. This has since helped develop a confidence as she now tries to communicate her wider needs and ask for support.
This week she was supported by one of our team to register at a local GP surgery and then took her around the area to show her where the local chemist and shops were and where to buy halal food.
This shows that little things and giving time matters.
