"What is Osteopathy?"

A very common question posed by patients and colleagues. It's a very difficult question to answer, and given that it lacks a universal definition only adds to that challenge.

However, amongst his many definitions, the founder of Osteopathy, Andrew Taylor Still said "Anatomy, anatomy and anatomy".

Defined by those representing the profession in the UK, it is a holistic approach to healthcare working with the neuromusculoskeletal systems to restore mechanical and non-mechanical balances.

Orthopaedic oriented practice for the most part of it although some would categorically disagree, osteopathy in the UK is largely a musculoskeletal based practice good a strong emphasis and appreciation for the neurological component.

It is a thorough understanding of this component coupled with an exceptional understanding of whole body biomechanics that in my enables the work of osteopaths to differentiate them from other forms of manual therapy.

Two types, primary and secondary of which 95% of cases are primary, affecting females significantly more than males.

It is not a weakening of the bone per se, as all of my students as well as most individuals would incorrectly state, rather as the WHO define it, a reduction in the bone mineral density. I would go further and add also compromise of the structural integrity of the trabecular meshwork inside the bone.
