Everyone talks about what dementia takes memory, recognition, routines.
But it doesn’t take the need to feel safe, to be spoken to kindly, to be treated with warmth.
When Lily began caring for Mrs. Harper, most days were quiet.
But she didn’t rush. She sat, listened, held her hand.
Then one morning, in the garden, Mrs. Harper looked up and whispered, “Thank you, Lily.”
Connection with dementia isn’t measured in memory.
It’s measured in presence.
And patience.
