🔍 ADHD Pathways: What Families Need to Know

When a child shows signs of ADHD, many parents find the process of getting support overwhelming.

Pathways can vary depending on your region, but most follow a similar set of steps. Knowing what to expect can make the journey feel more manageable.

💡 Early signs of ADHD may include:

🔹 Struggling to focus on tasks that don’t feel stimulating
🔹 Acting quickly without thinking (impulsivity)
🔹 Constant movement or a strong need for stimulation

🛤️ The typical path to assessment:

1️⃣ Start by raising concerns with a GP, teacher, or SENDCo
2️⃣ School provides observations and classroom evidence
3️⃣ Referral to a paediatrician, CAMHS, or private provider
4️⃣ Assessment with structured interviews and questionnaires
5️⃣ A support plan tailored to your child; this may include strategies at home or school, coaching, or medication

🧭 Why clarity matters:

Hearing “wait and see” can be discouraging - but understanding the steps helps families feel empowered and informed.

📘 At Tabla Psychology, we provide ADHD assessments and guidance to help you navigate each stage with confidence.

🎮 New Gaming Research Sparks Calls for Change in Schools and Parenting 🎮

Our founder and lead expert, Educational and Child Psychologist, Dr Tamasine Black, spoke to ITV News about growing concerns around late-night video gaming in teens.

📺 According to a new study, excessive gaming before bed is linked to:

🔹 Disrupted sleep
🔹 Poor concentration
🔹 Lower school engagement
🔹 Mental health risks

Tamasine discussed the need for both schools and parents to rethink routines, digital boundaries, and sleep hygiene to better support young people's well-being.

For children with Autism and ADHD there can be additional vulnerabilities.

We’ve created a blog with practical advice for parents and educators on how to manage late-night gaming and support healthier habits ➡️ https://tablapsychology.co.uk/itv-news-features-dr-tamasine-black-on-teen-sleep-gaming-and-school-performance/

👧🏻 👦🏽 Understanding Demand Avoidance in Children

Some children experience extreme distress when faced with everyday demands.

This is often referred to as a “demand avoidance profile” and is sometimes linked with autism. It’s not about defiance; it’s about anxiety, control, and safety.

What demand avoidance can look like:

🔹 Avoidance strategies like distraction, humour, or withdrawal
🔹 Strong need for control to feel safe
🔹 High anxiety when expectations feel overwhelming
🔹 Intense emotional responses when unable to avoid a demand

🤝 Support makes a difference.

Here’s how you can help:

✔️ Offer choices, not commands
✔️ Reduce pressure with small, informal steps
✔️ Build trust through safety and connection
✔️ Stay flexible - remember, “can’t” is not the same as “won’t”

At Tabla Psychology, we believe in compassionate, collaborative support that honours each child’s unique needs.
