Safeguarding Week
This week at Handsworth we have been carrying out a number of activities to mark safeguarding week.
We started the week with both staff and residents making pledges about how they could help ensure everyone at Handsworth remain safe and well. These were the added to our newly installed kindness tree where we will continue to add pledges and kindness quotes.
Wednesday saw us receive a talk from our safeguarding social worker Fola who discussed the signs to look out for and how and where to report any issues to. Both residents and staff found this very informative.
On thursday we had a visit from our community police officer who spoke with residents about how to keep safe when using their mobile phones and how to spot scams. We rounded off the week with a quiz afternoon in which residents and staff were teamed together to put their newly learned knowledge to the test. It has been a busy but extremely informative week for both staff and residents.

Some of our braver residents spent an afternoon carrying out science experiments. We used simple household items such as white vinegar and baking powder to carry out the experiments. The experiment that got everyone talking was blowing balloons up with the mixtures of vinegar and baking powder with each resident adding more baking powder than the one before them with the aim of trying to get the balloon to pop. 🎈 🧪

On Thursday our chaplain Andrew delivered a beautiful memorial service to honour residents who have recently passed. Relatives of those residents were invited to join us as we reflected on their time with us at Handsworth, along with them being encouraged to say a few words about their loved ones.
Andrew finished the service with a prayer of remembrance at our memorial tree in the garden where he then added leaves engraved with their names to the tree where they will continue to be a part of Handsworth.

Yesterday we spent the afternoon making magical fairy gardens. Using coconut shells as our base we added moss and miniature figures such as animals and houses. We had a lovely time with each resident talking about the gardens they had created.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of speaking to one of our residents about an amazing piece of history. During a recent conversation, Terry spoke about a diary that her dad had written during the first world war. Terry and I spent some time looking through the diary, which was one of her dads old school exercise books.
There were so many amazing entries in the diary including an entry where he described being reported as missing after falling asleep in a field.
One of the final entries was written on Armistice Day, it read:
“11-11-1918, I was stood in the middle of the duty when all was silent and that long waited for welcome Cease Fire was sounded the bugle.
And that is how i saw the end so simple an end to such a great war”
And today as we mark Armistice Day we remember all those that gave their lives for our country.

🌟 Amazing Achievement for Handsworth! 🌟

We’re so proud to share that Handsworth has recently had our yearly Infection Prevention & Control inspection — and we achieved an incredible 96%! 💙✨

This result is truly a team effort, and I couldn’t be prouder of every single member of our wonderful staff. A very special thank you goes to our fantastic domestic team, whose hard work, dedication, and pride in what they do help keep our home clean, safe, and welcoming for both residents, staff and visitor’s every single day. You are the quiet heroes behind the scenes, and we appreciate you more than words can say. 🙌💐

📸 Pictured are two of our amazing domestic team members who represent the heart of what we do.

Thank you to everyone at Handsworth for continuing to make our home a place of safety, dignity, and love. 💛

This afternoon we spent time creating some 3D poppy pictures to add to our Remembrance display. With some cutting and sticking we created some beautiful displays. Residents spent time during the activity remembering times when they visited their local cenotaphs to take part in Remembrance Day services.

“Remember remember the 5th November, gun powder treason and plot”
To mark bonfire night residents spent time making their own fire work salt paintings, using glue and salt. The simple activity created some lovely bright colourful pictures. It was lovely to see the different designs and spent time reminiscing about bonfire nights with families 🎆
