When you are stuck in fight or flight mode (anxious all the time) your digestive system is almost shut down because all energy is only required in the limbs and heart etc for fighting or running. This leads to all sorts of stomach issues. Aches and pains can also build in the shoulders, arms and legs due to being constantly tensed and ready to fight or run. It’s a basic defence system, which is very effective if we actually need it but these days the stress is caused by work, pressure and everyday life rather than being actually chased by a sabre tooth tiger! Unfortunately the threats and fear are delivered on a daily basis by the news and media which keeps many of us stuck in this fear state.
To switch off fight or flight mode do 20-30 very long, very slow outbreaths. With each outbreath consciously drop your shoulders and relax all muscles which feel tight. Repeat until you feel calmer. You may have to do this repeatedly over the next few weeks until your body realises that it’s not “in danger”
