Here at Howgate House this week we have been sorting lots of different things.

We had a tub of socks to sort out, some coloured beanbags in to tubs, red and yellow counters to separate, noughts & crosses and Jenga bricks that we coloured two of each at both ends in different colours.

The residents really liked sorting the beanbags and the red and yellow counters. The one that took the most concentration was the socks and the Jenga bricks.

There was also lots of laughter from the residents when they got it right and a lot of competitiveness between them.

With the noughts & crosses, one lady kept putting O X O and shouting OXO I win. It was a lot of fun.

It was a good day all round. I think it will have to be put in to our activities rotation as it was a big hit.

We had games like pin the clover on the leprechaun and throw the gold coins in the pot of old. We had temporary tattoos for staff and residents, we had green shamrock glassed, deelie boppers and Irish flag hats. Everyone had a lot of fun.

Melanie from activities got dressed up again and everyone loved it, the residents were really happy and there was lot of laughter.

We also had non alcoholic Guinness and Nozeco, buns and some fifteens, an Irish sweet snack made from digestive biscuits, cherries, marshmallows and condensed milk, it was a big hit with the residents and staff.

We had a day filled with laughter, conversations about holidays to Ireland and Guinness, a lot of people really like Guinness.

Hope you have fun looking through our photos.

On Valentine's Day one of our gentlemen wanted to make his girlfriend a card and a present.

We assisted him to make the card and gave him the option to make a bracelet or chose one from the stock we have. He really liked one we had in stock so he chose that. He wanted to give her something else so we looked in our cupboard and we found a fluffy hot water bottle for her. He was really happy with everything he had done and the things he had for her.

She came to see him in the afternoon and they both exchanged gifts and cards. They had a lovely little catch up and held hands. She was over the moon and stayed for about an hour and they never stopped talking or holding hands.

We had a lot of fun during our Celebrating Cultures day as people were dressed up (Mel), we had some delicious Chinese food, and we had a little dragon that we called king foo young. He was in a few of the pictures and some of the residents thought he was a dog.

There was a lot of fun and laughter, some of the residents wore Mel's wig. We did have a really good day and we can't wait for the March Celebrating Cultures day.

We took 3 of our ladies out on a trip to Bolling Hall Museum. We were unable to see all of the exhibit as their lift was out of commission but we still had a fantastic morning.

All the ladies got a lovely little owl from the museum gift shop and then we went to The Lodge at Bowling Park for More...Fresh Air, it is well worth a visit.

The ladies were really happy with their food and they really liked the place, it is so cosy and the staff are amazing. Two of our ladies had a small full English breakfast and one had carrot and coriander soup. A great day had by all!

Here are some pictures that we took when making some delicious carrot cake buns with our ladies.

They helped to make and decorate them, and one of our ladies said 'Do I get to eat it now?'. They really enjoyed getting involved and really enjoyed eating them.

We had our Polish Celebrating Cultures day on Wednesday 28th of January.

We all had a lot of fun, from homemade pierogis and Polish lemonade and lots of sweet treats from Poland. One of our staff members got dressed in Polish style clothes with a flowery headband (she made the skirt herself). The residents and other staff really liked it.

We went round to the residents' rooms and let them try the food and drink, some of them wore a flowery headband and had a picture taken. We were playing Polish music as we went around and we had a few facts and interesting information about Poland to show everyone.

The families who came that day joined in as well, some of the family members were really impressed with the food, drink and the music, not to mention our lifestyle member Mel who was dressed in Polish clothes.

We had a really good day and we are looking forward to our culture day in February.
