Tight neck & shoulders? You're not alone! Our physical activities, whether it be sitting, working, driving, eating, riding a bike...all contribute to tension in the shoulders and neck. And on top of that we tend to round our shoulders and clench our jaw in protection when we experience stress, as part of the natural fight-or-flight response. And this is where yoga steps in to save the day! Using our breath alongside some shoulder and neck-release postures we will find deep physical release and relaxation and reverse the effects of activities and stress and give our shoulders a huge sigh of relief and a pat on the back - because we will be able to reach (!) for being so darn supportive =)

This week's theme is 🔥FIRE🔥! Inspired by bonfire night, the beautiful firey coppers, golds and bronze colours of the trees this autumn and the firey red and pink sunsets at this time of year (this burning sunset was from last night over our street!).

In yoga, fire (Agni) means renewal; burning away the surface barriers to reveal new growth beneath. This is not about changing who you are and being someone different to please others, it's about burning away what no longer serves you and letting go of the baggage we carry around so we can let our true selves burn through, harnessing our inner strength.

We can use our practise to stoke our internal fire to burn off frustration, agitation, apathy, self-doubt to reveal calm, acceptance, courage and resilience. Our internal fire will build power and strength that we can harness to nurture change, forging a new perspective.

So tonight, expect some core-work and longer holds, all leading to some lovely yummy releases. So, like a Phoenix, we can rise from the flames renewed and forged stronger, affirming our belief that we can get through this and meet the challenge for the sake of positive change x

Are you spooked by the idea of going upside down 😱? If you are, you're not alone! 🙃

Going upside down can feel really scary! An inversion is any posture where the heart is above the head (so downward dog is technically an inversion) or anything where the feet are over the heart (think shoulderstand, headstand, handstand)…

There are loads of physical and mental benefits of inversions; they improve circulation, boost the lymphatic system, enhance spinal health, build strength and balance and they can relieve stress, calm the mind and boost mood and energy. The journey to inverting can be challenging physically but also mentally! We need to shift our perspective and have faith and courage that we are prepared and we have what it takes. Often the journey is made up of lots of small steps so we can take time to build confidence and the best way to travel along the journey to inversions is to just keep trying...with no expectation or attachment to the outcome.

Tonight we will build a balance of strength and mobility so we will spend most of the class stretching out the shoulders and building strength in our core, arms and shoulders so we feel safe and secure if/when the time feels right to go upside down. There will be plenty of options whether you want to go upside down or not, so come along and add a new perspective to your day :)

The clocks go back this weekend, meaning an extra hour in bed (whoop!) and an earlier sunset. This is when I really feel the shift of the seasons, when the night's draw in, and there's a feeling of cosiness as the fairy lights twinkle ✨️

I am really sensitive to day light and at this time of year when I know the balance is tipping towards darkness, I find myself slowing down and enjoying every colour; savouring the daylight and the beautiful burst of nature's palette before the dormancy of winter- this photo is Swinsty reservoir this week and the colours really were this phenomenonal!

Often, in our busy lives, we find it hard to slow down, and sometimes it feels like an indulgence to take time out and rest, but this self-care is necessary so we can support ourselves physically and mentally. So tonight, I invite you to slow down your day as we use our deep breaths to move slowly deeper as we stretch out the whole body from head to toe, with special attention to the hips and groin. Each breath is coupled with a subtle energetic direction and movement of the body, helping us to stay present and explore to find the sweet release of tension. Sigh it all out and let it all go 💚

We're celebrating the wonderful mechanics of the spine this evening. The spine is a complex arrangement of bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, discs, a spinal cord and nerves so keeping the spine supple and healthy helps support us through life. A healthy spine can move in 6 different directions: forward/backward bend, left/ right side stretch and left/right twist and we use these movements every day...and our flow tonight will be all about these lovely curves and arches :) Be there or be square 😂 x

A few places left for Fold into Fall afternoon of yoga!
Sunday 19th October 1

I absolutely love this time of year; watching the daily changes in nature, the beautiful colours of the leaves, the crisp fresh air and the feeling of cosiness as the night's draw in.
Autumn is a season of change and transformation, letting go and taking stock. Unlike summer where a lot of our energy and focus are directed outward, autumn is the season to turn inwards, to wonder and reflect. Just as the trees lose their leaves in autumn so we must let go of anything we no longer need, whether that’s clutter in the house, an attachment to summer, negative thought patterns or old beliefs that are no longer serving us. By letting go we create the space to welcome in the new. This will be the theme of the Autumn afternoon of yoga where we will slow down, nurture and rest so we can embrace the season of change and nourish our body and mind.

The afternoon will open with a calming mindfulness meditation accompanied with Pranayama (breath work) to settle you and develop a sense of physical, emotional & spiritual well being. Followed by a gentle slow flow to build a little heat and release tension. We will then take a break with some warming vegan refreshments. Then slowing down even more with supportive and nourishing restorative yoga to relax & unwind. Finishing with a lovely long relaxation guiding you into a deep rest.

Open to all (including beginners). Limited places are available so booking is essential. Props for the restorative session, including bolsters and blankets, will be available to borrow at the session (but bring your own if you have them).

To fully unwind and unplug, this session will be in-studio only.
You can book by clicking the button above or you can pay next time you're in class. Any questions? Email yogabradford@gmail.com

09/10/2025

Friday 10th October is World Mental Health day, a reminder of the importance to prioritise and invest in good mental health.

I have always struggled with anxiety, panic attacks and the tendency to catastrophize. In 2009, I went to a counsellor, who introduced me to the mindfulness body scan; checking in the physical sensations in my body as a way of unhooking my mind from the whirling thoughts. This was the first step in me believing there was a different way of living and thinking.

Around the same time, I started yoga practise in earnest and realised the similarity between the body scan and the awareness we bring to our body and mind in yoga through movement and breath. I remember a moment of breakthrough; after a class, I realised I had gone a whole hour without hooking into my anxious thoughts - up until that point, I hadn't realised I cut put those thoughts down, not even for a moment. This genuinely transformed the way I engaged with the world, I realised I had a choice; I had the capacity to let go of the mental baggage and the realisation I had this power was a massive relief. Whilst I still get anxious and catastrophize, I am now aware of it and I have learned my own effective mental techniques that enable me to notice and make a choice when these patterns show up.

One of these tools is mindfulness; which I practise as much as I can every day. Ben and I did a foraging course at the weekend and our dog walks this week have been mainly dropping down to look at all the wonderful funghi popping up around our woodland, it's amazing what you see when you consciously look! When we actively choose to notice the present, we give ourselves the power to release ourselves from thought loops that weigh us down, cause us pain, drain our potential, and make everything else harder. We have more power to release them than we think.

So in tonight's practice we will be mindful, breathe, move, relax and release those areas where we tend to hang on to stuff and to find stillness before rest. To lighten your load this week and to feel that setting down even one burden creates real inner space, for clarity, calm and inner freedom to grow 💚

I took this photo this week; I love how the reflection in the stillness of the water enhances the colour of the sky, reminding me of the beauty in stillness & calm 💚

Autumn symbolises a return to rhythm, focus & balance where we can reclaim concentration, clarity and establish equanimity. Equanimity (upeshka), is a living practice of observing & adapting our thoughts and reactions as we encounter the ups and downs of life. Equanimity is not a state of withdrawal or suppression, but a practice of engaging with all aspects of life while remaining open, centred and even-minded. This can be one of the hardest practices of life! When we experience equanimity, we can feel both balanced & grounded. It doesn’t mean that life challenges vanish, but by releasing the energy of attachment or aversion we can find a little more presence and peace.

Tonight we will practice maintaining balance and calm in the face of fluctuations, finding a balance of effort and surrender. We will find our balance...knowing it's okay to wobble! That is what balance is, dealing with the constant fluctuations in the body and the mind. Even a little shaking as we balance is the body’s proprioceptive systems mapping movement in its efforts to find a steady centre. We learn more every time we fall and we can use these challenges to observe our inner narrative and the mental energy we bring to each pose.

We can practise Dharana (focused attention) by cultivating a focused gaze (Drishti) to deepen awareness, and steady the mind & body. This concentration enables us to focus our energy and find our balance. We will emphasize slow, controlled motions to encourage mindfulness and we will keep coming back to the breath as an anchor to navigate any strong emotions, both on and off the mat.

Equanimity is a living practice. Surrender to the process and allow yourself to experience joy and happiness in the present moment. Dive beneath the fluctuations and discover a place of peace and love; knowing this stable centre within yourself is always there, making you strong enough to deal with any situation so when life throws you challenges, you can drop down deep into this eternal place of peace 💚

25/09/2025

Now it is officially Autumn, we are continuing the seasonal theme of letting go...of old habits, behaviours and thought patterns that no longer serve us and replacing them with routines the nourish, replenish and encourage us to feel whole.

Autumn is the season of harvest - this season connects us to a sense of fullness and fruition, reminding us we are complete and whole as we are. There is nothing missing, fragmented, or separate. We tell ourselves so many stories about how we are lacking, broken, inadequate or incomplete. Yoga is about clearing away whatever is in us that prevents our living in the most full and whole way.

With yoga, we become aware of how and where we are restricted - in body, mind, and heart - and how gradually to open and release these blockages. As these blockages are cleared, our energy is freed. We start to feel more harmonious, more at one with ourselves. Our lives begin to flow — or we begin to flow more in our lives and our practise lets us step back into a place of healing, integration, steadiness and wholeness.

We can find this steadiness through discipline; “Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.” (Jim Rohn) and we can cultivate discipline on our mat and this discipline will help us to develop and maintain routines, habits, behaviours and thought patterns that are nourishing through small, steady changes that we repeat in our lives.

So tonight, we will cultivate and practise this Tapas (yogic discipline) as we flow and repeat some foundational prep poses for the hamstrings, hip flexors and quads - gradually easing deeper if/when your body feels ready, reminding ourselves that Tapas, yogic discipline, transforms our practice through small, steady actions. And whilst we may choose to go deeper into the postures, when we meet resistance, there is nothing lacking, there is no failure. The accomplishment is recognising you are already whole, steady and present 💚

18/09/2025

It's the Autumn equinox next Monday 22nd September, when the sun is directly over the equator and when the day and night are equal length.

I love the cycle of nature and the shift between seasons. This equinox reminds us that there is always balance; light & dark, day & night, inhale & exhale, effort & ease, strength & vulnerability, calm & chaos.

To celebrate this balance and harmony, tonight's flows are a balance of yin & yang. We will start with some gentle yin stretches to stretch the hips and side body. Followed by a more dynamic yang flow with core curls, bicycles and dancing warrior sequences. Then finishing with some more yin - slowing down to emphasize the turn of the year towards the quieter, inward phase.

Yin is a slow, long-hold style of yoga that targets deep tissues such as joints, ligaments and fascia – the wafer-thin sheath around each of your muscles. These connective tissues can become damaged when stressed or injured and, as our bodies age, they become less flexible. Not only does yin have wonderful physical benefits, but taking some time to slow down and notice the sensations in the body can bring a sense of calm and connection. As life speeds up it's important to take time out to slow down so we can find balance in both body and mind x

We will be celebrating Autumn in all it's glory with my seasonal Afternoon of Yoga - Fold into Fall - on Sunday 19th October 1-4pm. There are a few places left and it's available to book on the retreats section of yogabradford.co.uk Message me if you would like more details xx
