British Society of Dental Hygiene & Therapy The British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy STRATEGIC PLAN

BSDHT's strategic plan is the basis upon which the Society operates.

The British Society of Dental Hygiene & Therapy, BSDHT (formerly British Dental Hygienists' Association, BDHA) was set up in 1949 by a group of 12 dental hygienists who felt the time was right to organise a professional association to represent the interests of their profession. Over 60 years later, the BSDHT is a nationally recognised body that represents over 3,000 members across the UK and beyond. OUR MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of BSDHT is to represent the interests of members and to provide a consultative body for public and private organisations on all matters relating to dental hygiene and therapy. We aim to work with other professional and regulatory groups to provide the highest level of information to our members as well as to the general public. The Society seeks to increase the range of benefits offered to members and to support this with a clear business and financial strategy. The Society will continue to work to increase membership for the benefit of the profession

OUR SOCIETY AIMS TO:

* Represent members at national level, particularly in the political arena
* Provide services to members
* Support members on issues which affect their working lives
* Produce a publication that educates, updates and inspires
* Provide CPD opportunities, both locally and nationally
* Help members to find employment and provide guidance on contractual matters
* Listen to members and respond accordingly. It directs the decision making processes within the Society and provides mechanisms to monitor progress and success. The plan is all embracing and affects all aspects of the Society's business.

At the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we pause to remember.

Armistice Day marks the end of the First World War and honours all those who gave their lives in service.

Today, BSDHT joins the nation in a moment of silence and reflection for the courage and sacrifice that shaped our tomorrow.

Lest we forget.

Open to BSDHT members too!

Today, on Remembrance Sunday, we pause to honour the courage and sacrifice of all those who have served and continue to serve in the armed forces.

BSDHT remembers not only the lives lost, but the hope they fought to protect.

Their legacy and service reminds us of the value of peace, unity and resilience.

“To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.” – Thomas Campbell.

General Dental Council announces Annual Retention Fee for 2026

The Council has agreed the General Dental Council’s (GDC’s) strategy for the next three years, the strategic priorities and the funding required to deliver these.

In turn, this decision has set the Annual Retention Fee (ARF) for 2026 at £698 for dentists and £108 for dental care professionals (DCPs).

Following the announcement Tom Whiting, Chief Executive and Registrar of the GDC, said:

"Our vision is to be a trusted and effective regulator, supporting dental professionals to provide safe and effective care for their patients. We have a clear delivery plan to achieve our strategic ambitions and remain committed to protecting the public and maintaining public confidence in the dental professions.

"We will provide transparency about the work we do to deliver our strategic ambitions and will measure and report on our progress. Council has approved the investment needed to achieve this transformation whilst considering affordability for dental professionals.

"The GDC will adjust the ARF as needed from 2027 onwards. Other than in exceptional circumstances, any increase will not exceed the rate of the Consumer Price Index (CPI)”.

The annual renewal period for dentists will open on 10 November 2025, with the ARF to be paid by 31 December 2025.

Renewal will open in June next year for those on the dental care professional register, with the ARF to be paid by 31 July 2026.
