Notions of Perspective

I've been sitting with the beech tree this week, recording my experiences for my research project on nature connection. I found a cherry leaf with a perfectly eaten round hole that formed a portal to view the beech tree above my head.
It allowed me to focus my gaze and enter another world.

Practising with beautiful pigments made by the talented earth artist .jackie to decorate my white goat moon drum.

It was Lunar Samhain yesterday. This is the new moon that occurs around the time of the traditional Celtic festival of Samhain. I picked this date to decorate my drum with natural silk and linen because the moon phase and the rituals of Samhain are all about the connection between the natural cycles and the spiritual world: perfect for a journeying drum.

The colours I used were gifted to me by Jackie, and I spent time intuitively matching the colours to each of the 9 sacred herbs to bring the plant spirits in. I used my left thumb print to mark the bottom edge of each of the 9 silks and added the glyph for Samhain above each thumbprint.

Why left? I learned in India that this thumb print is the woman's destiny print as the Goddess Parvati resides in the left side of the body. I believe using this print will imbue my drum with my essence and power.

You can now book to birth your own drum with me. Go to my website, floralark.co.uk

The weather was perfect for our plant connections workshop on Sunday! 🌟🍂🍄‍🟫
We made friends with Hawthorn, learning about the folklore, history of medicinal use before connecting in spiritually and in person when we wrote eco-poetry. 🌿
We ended the day preserving all the loveliness of Hawthorn and others in our elixirs and oxymels.

Look out for our next course coming in November. And check out www.floralark.co.uk for more details on what we do here at floral Ark 🤍🌲

Autumn Altar 🧡🐝 Spiritual room altar is all set up for Autumn Equinox…
The word means high place and also connected to burning. I always light a candle on the altar to represent that spirit is present. The bees were found around the garden and bought in to honour them and the work they do pollinating the medicinal and food plants around the garden. Did you know that one third of every bite of food we eat is due to insects pollinating the plants. Don’t you think they’re worthy of worship?

Something a little different today!

We've been very practical here in the garden, experimenting with ferments to create lovely, lush, nutritious compost to feed the soil.

We usually passive compost - pile brown and green material in a big heap and leave for a year. This creates great compost for mulching, but it doesn't get hot enough to make it sterile, as a lot of seeds germinate. This isn't always a bad thing... FREE PLANTS 🪴😁... Having different types of compost and feeds made on site just makes sense for different ways we need to use them.

The comfrey is coming in useful, as are the large elecampne and Jerusalem artichoke leaves in our experiment. They are full of micronutrients and breakdown very fast.

Watch this space for ongoing reports.

How do you compost?

How many plants can you recognise?

These were the herbs foraged in the garden for the drum birthed on the 7th day of the 7th month. They were selected with intention, holding meaning for the co-creator of the deer hide drum.

The last image shows how the drum imbued with these flower and plant energies turned out!

What flowers would you choose for your drum? 🌸🌱🌼
