Yoga and its benefit

Yoga is an all inclusive discipline that has been present in every ancient culture that has been kept alive through the more recent centuries in India. In order to achieve these states of higher consciousness, they found that they had to work through the body and the breath, and in doing so, through this process, they found yoga to have great health benefits which has come more to the fore through the research of in recent times. Yoga has the capacity through posture work and breathing techniques
to bring the mind to a tension-less state while still conscious. Which is the greatest form of relaxation, as this, in turn, rejuvenates, revitalizes and replenishes the body in a systematic way. Yoga strengthens and keeps flexibility In the cardiovascular and muscular systems and aids in the relief of aches and pains, stress, anxiety and depression. It also improves self confidence, concentration and creativity .

3 to 4 weeks ago i could barely do three full rounds of Surya Namascar and those three felt heavy clumsy stiff achie and labourious. This is the message I recieved when doing them. Rob you have been resting on those laurels way too long. So i got out of them and began again with my morning yoga practice in earnest. So now three to four weeks on, the swan is not only air borne, not only flying, but in long distance and rising. Once one learns to ride the bike it is never forgotten. Same as for yoga postures. Same for stamina as well, mental plane physic plane physical plane. While in migration, the body of the swan knows, and when not in migration the body of the swan knows.

This was June 2023, I had lost some ground between then and the beginning of this year.. but I have caught that back up and gained some.. well more than some... I have spent a year in home practice getting it back. Wake up calls are good for me, especially when I take heed and then act on them. Just taking heed is no good, one has to implement the change for progress to occur.

In yoga practice, when moving the body into asana and out of asana, how is it possible to move from enforcer to enjoyer. Well this has to happen. the enforcer has no intention of allowing the body to ease realx and stretch all in good patience, nope the enforcer wants it now!. and this is called yoga. No the posture is yoga but the practice of it certainly aint, not when it is being enforced on the body. Ignorance is bliss until reality comes. But when is that gonna happen. Yes it is ok to push ones self as long as there is an awareness of how far to take that pushing, easing the edge, then testing it with the breath, in knowing what is going on, where their edges are, with the parts of the body that are facilitating the posture. Yes it is good to push, but this must be done with due care consideration and respect to what the parts of the body can handle. Then there is the requirement of more time relaxing in a counter posture while remaining attentive to what changes are taking place, have taken place. Tension is compression. if tension is driving the yoga, then the practitioner is dead in the water.

Force is the enemy of relaxation, any form of force in taking beyond what the parts of the body can do, is called ignorance. Trying to get the body somewhere is the enemy of seeing into what is going on with the various parts of the body, and then adjuting where and when necessary. this is far enough is a decision that is determined by an inner intelligence that is gained through the development of inner awareness. With patience care and consideration, the parts of the body has the capacity to release tension which manifests in the body parts releasing from. The comes through a switch from being the instigator of the movement to being the observer of the movement. There is a shift from out of linear ' billiard ball' sequential perception to a more holistic i all nclusive perception where the whole body all the parts can be percieved simultaneously. in other words moving out of closed limited linear into open expansive holistic. The power comes when the parts become integrated through inner awareness and conscious activation in this holistic way. This is tapped into through the breath and conscious breathing which then is connected th that inner psychic conscious awareness that is encouraged to flow through the inner landscape of the physical body. this breath which is at the centre of it all is what brings this coordination psynchronicity and thus power. This is the trick in moving out of tension ( Weightfulness) and into ease ( weightlessness). There is a perceptive transformation that can be felt on the physical plane. Strain transforms into effortlessness. This leads to bliss and joy in yoga postures where as before there was only struggle and complain

With the Surya Namaskara asana series of 12 postures there are 12 corresponding mantras. To my surprise I have learnt memorized them and chanted them with the postures in less than an hour or so. This is how I know that a real limiting blockage has been released. There is another part to this story though, as way back on the yoga teacher training course, a course (2012 to 2014) tutor Maduri gave us this mantra sequence with Surya Namaskara posture series. This today is the first time that i have returned to give it a go. Am i surprised, yes I am cos it is now November 2025. I am going to continue to ingrain these mantras into my being. The sun is always shining ( rays always bright) on the inside beneath and beyond the veil.

Revelation number Three..
In Yoga, before moving into any new position, awareness of the starting position is of utmost importance. Composure is as mecessary here as it is before commencing any spiritual practice or important task.

Yoga is not about gymnastic flexibility.. it is about developing and experiencing joy and well being..

from Surya Namaskara by Swami Satyananda Saraswati.. the following..

Once we become accustomed to the joy and well being of stretching, breathing and learning about the body, it becomes more and more difficult to develop the chronic tensions responsible for disease.
