Riders Dominate Bridgend Sports in Memorable Double-Header at Cae Gof

On a cold, crisp afternoon at Cae Gof, the Riders welcomed nearest rivals Bridgend Sports for a true rugby feast. On a rare occasion — the first time in over ten years — both the 1st XV and 2nd XV played at home on the same day, with the 2nd XV kicking things off earlier in the afternoon.

The day started perfectly for the Riders as the 2nd XV ran out convincing 37–5 winners. From the opening minute, the pack dominated proceedings and, but for a lack of discipline from an over-eager and fired-up side, the Riders could easily have been two tries ahead inside the opening five minutes.

Man of the Match Darris Lyddon was immense in both attack and defence, helping himself to a try and proving a constant threat ball in hand. The new centre partnership of Andrew John and Matthew Burnell, who had only met 30 minutes before kick-off, caused chaos for the Sports defence throughout. An honourable mention also goes to Graham “The Gooch” Burford, who made a welcome return after a long injury lay-off and looked as though he’d never been away.

The Super 2s now sit proudly at four wins from four — the future is bright.

The 1st XV were in no mood to let festive cheer distract them from the task at hand. Playing in front of a strong crowd and attacking into a stiff breeze, the Riders struck early through number eight Dylan Thomas-Jones, with skipper Tom Carpenter adding the conversion.

7–0

To their credit, Bridgend Sports responded immediately with a well-worked try of their own.

7–5

From that point on, however, it was all Riders. Two quick scores followed — another for Thomas-Jones and one for young centre Ieuan Allen — before lively winger Alex Underhill crossed to extend the lead. Centre Ifan Rossister then danced over for another just before half-time.

With Carpenter accurate from the tee, the Riders went into the break leading 31–5.

Despite several changes at half-time, the Riders only increased the tempo. With the wind now at their backs, they were ruthless in attack, turning almost every visit to the Sports 22 into points. Lewis Rees and Lloyd Allen both got on the scoresheet, as did ho**er Harri Williams, while replacement centre Lewis Anderson crossed before flanker Lewis Rees added another.

The final quarter saw no let-up. Underhill grabbed his second of the afternoon, Carpenter capped off a fine performance with a well-deserved try of his own, and replacement flanker Lewis Allen rounded off the scoring.

Carpenter was in excellent form with the boot, missing just two conversions all afternoon.

Full credit to Bridgend Sports, who battled until the final whistle on what proved to be a tough day against a Riders side improving week on week.

Final Scores at Cae Gof
• 1st XV: Riders 83 – 5 Bridgend Sports
• 2nd XV: Riders 37 – 5 Bridgend Sports

You would have to go back over 15 years to find such a comprehensive home scoreline.

Reflection

As the Riders head into the closing stages of the first part of the season, performances like this underline the progress being made across the club. With strength in depth and confidence growing every week, both squads look forward to the second half of the season with real optimism.

A huge thank you, as always, to our Home Match sponsors! 🙌

The Riders welcome Bridgend Sports to Cae Gof this Saturday.

Following a very strong away performance at Penlan last weekend, the coaches have made one tactical change to the starting XV. Prop Joe Williams comes into the starting lineup, with Phil Burnell moving to the bench.

There are some welcome additions among the replacements. Marcus David returns from injury, Tony Millington returns from work commitments, while Lewis Allen is back from army duties and joins his brother Lloyd and nephew Ieuan in the matchday squad.

With our unbeaten 2nd XV also taking on their Bridgend Sports counterparts, it promises to be a fantastic day at the club.

So get your Christmas jumpers on and come down to Cae Gof to support the boys. There’ll be post-match entertainment and a raffle to round off the day.

Match Report

Penlan RFC v Cefn Cribwr RFC
“The Riders Roll On”

The Riders faced one of their sternest challenges of the season this afternoon as they travelled to Penlan , never an easy place to visit.

Having narrowly edged the home fixture earlier in the season by 31–30, Cefn knew this would be a real test. A cold, windy December afternoon only added to the challenge.

Despite a few late changes, the Riders were close to full strength, while Penlan had clearly recruited since the last meeting, fielding a number of new faces themselves.

Playing into a moderate breeze, Cefn started solidly, taking the sting out of the home side early on. Strong line-out pressure and composed handling from skipper Tom Carpenter created the opening score, with centre Ifan Rossiter diving spectacularly into the far corner for a superb try. Carpenter was unable to add the extras.

5–0 Cefn

Penlan responded soon after, working through multiple phases before catching Cefn short on the narrow side to level the scores.

5–5

From that point on, the Riders took control of the game, dominating territory and possession. They will have been frustrated to come away with just a Carpenter penalty for their efforts.

Half-time: 8–5 Cefn

With the wind at their backs, Cefn began the second half strongly but again struggled to turn sustained pressure into points. As the game entered the final quarter, it was another Carpenter penalty that finally settled the nerves of the travelling supporters.

11–5 Cefn

With the home side still within a score, Penlan threw the kitchen sink at the Riders’ defence. The Cae Gof boys were more than up to the challenge. Young Ieuan Allen and Rossiter were rock solid in midfield, but it was the Cefn pack who truly went toe-to-toe with their opposite numbers.

After weathering the mini storm, Carpenter had the final say with his third penalty of the afternoon.

Final Score: Penlan RFC 5 – 14 Cefn Cribwr RFC

It’s been said all season, but these Riders are made of steel, built on a strong team bond. This was a game they controlled from the opening minutes, and on another day they could easily have crossed for a few more tries.

Full credit to Penlan, who fought hard until the end, but they were ultimately no match for the Riders on the day. We wish them all the best for the remainder of the season.

After such a strong all-round performance, it was difficult to single out individuals, as every player played for the badge. The back-row trio of Dylan Jones-Thomas, Lloyd Allen and Lewis Rees were outstanding in defence once again but this was truly a 1-to-20 effort, with bodies on the line across the park.

A huge thank you, as always, to our Away Match sponsors! 🙌

MATCH REPORT: Cefn Cribwr RFC vs Glais RFC.

After the autumn international break, the Riders welcomed Glais to Cae Gof in weather conditions that could only be described as horrendous. With driving wind and rain, it was always going to be a real challenge for both sides.

Cefn started the game with the wind at their backs, attacking the clubhouse end, and immediately flew out of the blocks. Some excellent interplay between backs and forwards saw Dylan Thomas crash over under the posts. Skipper Tom Carpenter added the extras.

Moments later, a sharp break from scrum-half Scott Walker took him over the whitewash for the second try, again converted by Carpenter.

Cefn 14–0 Glais

Despite relentless Cefn pressure on the Glais try line, credit must go to the visitors who defended bravely, though not always legally to keep the Riders out. That resistance finally broke on the stroke of half-time when flanker Ant Burnell powered his way over. Carpenter slotted the conversion.

Half-time: Cefn 21–0 Glais

Glais started the second half brightly with a spell of pressure, but the Riders’ defence refused to give an inch. Lloyd Allen and fellow forwards Lewis Rees , Dylan Thomas put in some huge defensive tackles to keep the visitors at bay.

As the game moved into the final quarter, Cefn stepped up another gear. A perfectly executed set play from an attacking scrum sent centre Ifan Rossiter slicing through to score the try of the game beneath the posts. Carpenter added the extras once again.

Next came a real opportunist try from young winger Ieuan Allen, who chased his own chip ahead and won the race to touch down brilliantly in the corner.
Cefn 33–0 Glais

It was all Cefn at this stage, and further pressure led to the final home score of the afternoon. Dylan Thomas, showing great power and strength, grabbed his second of the day, Carpenter converting to make it 40–0.

In the dying moments, Glais grabbed a well-deserved consolation try , just reward for battling right to the end.

Final score: Cefn Cribwr RFC 40–5 Glais RFC

A fantastic all-round team performance from the Riders in extremely challenging conditions.

A big thank you to Glais for travelling up in such weather, and we wish them the very best for the rest of the season.

A huge thank you as always to our Home man of the match sponsors Simon Suss Thomas and Justin Rees of Just Hogolicious and the Swan Aberkenfig:-
