Avalon Priory (Grade II listed) in Chilton Polden, Somerset, built in 1836 by William Stradling as a folly containing a tower, chapel and grotto to house his antiquarian collection and to hold meetings of his Masonic Lodge (The Lodge of Perpetual Friendship, Bridgwater). In the time since, it was enlarged into a country home for Katherine Maltwood (1878-1961) sculptress and visionary discoverer of the Glastonbury Zodiac. Examples of her scupltures still exist in the chapel and grounds. Today the place provides a vegan houseshare & holistic events venue.

Avalon Priory is a Holistic Centre comprising a residential community, rooms for visitors (BnB, volunteers etc.) plus spaces for hire (group room, Great Hall, chapel, therapy room) for courses, retreats, ceremonies (alternative weddings/handfastings, partings, namings, commemorations). Future development will provide a sauna/steamroom, yoga shala/fitness studio/lecture room, dormitory accommodation & studios. There are also horses on site available for ba****ck riding/equitherapy.
The centre welcomes people from all backgrounds, faiths, religions, nationalities, ethnicities, colours, genders, sexualities, abilities. The place is kept vegan, organic, alcohol/substance-free (smoking allowed in designated areas & kombucha permitted as an alternative to alcohol).
The main part of the property is Grade II Listed and comprises a Medieval Chapel & Tower plus a Country House built in the Gothic Revival / Arts’n’Crafts style by esteemed architect Bligh Bond who was responsible for the excavations at Glastonbury Abbey (uncovering King Arthur & Guinevere).
It was a former home of Katherine Maltwood, famous for the rediscovery of the Glastonbury Landscape Zodiac as well as a noted Arts & Crafts sculptress, esotericist, traveller & collector. There are a couple of her sculptures on site - Magna Mater & Avallon.
The property lies in 40 acres of grounds including a Listed Grotto & Pleasure Garden, sweeping lawn (suitable for marquees, outdoor gatherings), pasture, orchard and woodland. There are panoramic 360 degree vistas from the Tower roof deck with views towards the River Severn/Wales and Glastonbury Tor.
The location is high on the Polden Hill ridge, 6 miles from J23 M5 & Bridgwater (10 minutes’s drive); 9 miles from Glastonury (20 minutes’ drive) and within easy reach of Cheddar, the Mendip Hills AONB, Bath (World Heritage City). Burnham-on-Sea, Taunton. The nearest train station is Bridgwater with coaches at Glastonbury. There is a regular 376 bus which runs from Bridgwater to Wells from the village (Chilton Polden).
