Ready steady….. go is highly motivating because children learn that when we say “go” something happens. We also use a familiar repeated phrase. These are all elements that lead to language learning.

Here are some toys and games for using ready steady go.

Top tips for using ready steady go are :
1) Getting down to your child’s level and reducing distractions
2) Pause before saying the word “go”
3) Accept all methods of communication. This could be them looking at you making a noise or pointing.
4) Remember that waiting is tricky so offer lots of opportunity to practise.
5) Try expanding on the vocabulary you use so ready steady “jump” or ready steady pop instead of ready, steady, go.
6) Keep the activities fun by being as animated as possible.

Today, one of our NQTs worked with another child with Word Finding Difficulties and gaps within their vocabulary.

In todays session, they sorted items by their location (e.g. household items into rooms of the house). You could sort by category (e.g. food vs. animals), subcategory (e.g. fruit vs. vegetables), function/use of the object (e.g. things we eat vs. things we wear), or attribute (e.g. big vs. little).

Sorting games are fun and are a great way to learn and remember new words! For extra tricky words, why not try a Word Map?!
