How do we stay embodied in a time of collective grief & overwhelm?
A big misconception is that being embodied means being calm.
Which isn’t the case.
Being embodied means to stay in contact with sensation without dissociating.
Being Embodied means being in the truth of what is present both personally & collectively.
We can be Embodied in rage, grief and anger; so if you are feeling these things right now- know that you are having a normal response to witnessing an overwhelming amount of grief and injustice:
Being embodied is about being able to feel what’s there without abandoning ourselves.
But when it gets too much, when there is more than we are able to process in real time, we become flooded and shut down/dissociate.
Small ways we can stay in our body when it all gets too much:
1. Feel your Feet - overwhelm pulls us into our heads - let your awareness come back to the feet. Push them into the ground. Wiggle your toes. Notice the sensation of your socks/shoes the floor.
2. Lengthen your exhale - make ha and hum sounds. Flutter the lips. Massage your jaw. Breathe it out. When we are overwhelmed or in shock we can get stuck on an inhale - exhale as fully as you can.
3. Cover your eyes with your palms. Let your visual system rest and reset. We see more in a day than we would have in a lifetime once.
When you are in your body, you are in your truth & power and much less easy to control.
Embodiment is Resistance.
