Finding some rest and relaxation, space to breathe and connect with the elements on our wonderful trip to Australia, encompassing the sights of Sydney, Melbourne and the East coast of Tasmania. I only wish it could have been longer - there is so much spectacular scenery to behold and drink in.

Journeying through various locations of Sydney, there are gentle reminders of the various systems within our body that keep us going, regardless of the challenging moments we experience.

Our nervous system adapts and keeps us going, as does our fascia - calling on support from other anatomical structures to share the load.

Seeing this tree, with all its ancient wisdom, deep roots and adaptations to its environment, was a lovely moment of connection. I find that every tree, like each one of us, has its own energy, and yet its roots connect and communicate with all the trees in its vicinity - its community - an expansive network that offers information and support. A reminder that we are all interconnected - in more ways than we often realise.

Great day at the Craniosacral Therapy Conference, hearing excellent presentations around the theme of the heart.
Also wonderful to reunite with fellow practitioners and have a catch up.

A quiet space ready for another day of clients.

And what will enter clinic today?

Crowded teeth, teenagers preparing for the start of the new academic year, lower back pain……….

Symptoms can be many and varied and gentle grounding on my part begins some time before the first client arrives, enabling me to listen with my hands and with my focus and hold space for each in their turn.

Sciatica shows up in my clinic on a fairly regular basis, as it has done recently with a client. Sciatica is a nerve pain originating in the lower lumbar spine, spreading across the hip and with the potential to reach down the back of the leg to the feet and even the toes.

The junction between the lumbar and sacrum is a pivotal part of the spine that can become compressed, trapping the sciatic nerve. This can also impact the digestive, urinary and reproductive organs, as well as relating to the second energy centre/chakra connected with relationships, ancestors, creativity and fertility.

Depending which side of the body the symptoms develop will also indicate whether yin or yang energy is involved, the right side of the body relating to masculine attributes such as action, getting things done or anger, while the yin side of the body, on the left, relates more to intuition, sadness and possibly even grief.

A Craniosacral treatment for sciatica would take the above into account and include palpating and assessing the sacrum and lumbar spine, as well as other regions of the body in a holistic approach that seeks to address the root cause of the issue, not merely the symptoms - with very positive results.

One of the clients I’m seeing in clinic at the moment is seeking help for crowded teeth, causing misaligned incisors in the upper jaw, while her lower jaw protrudes forwards. The young woman, now in her late twenties, has experienced ongoing issues with this since childhood.

Frequent visits to an orthodontist as a child had resulted in a painful brace being applied, making it impossible for her to chew solid food and she was instructed to wear night retainers for the rest of her life. However, the crowding and misalignment has slowly returned and she has an ongoing fear of orthodontists!

The maxillae (the upper jaw) connect with 45% of the cranial bones, so any narrowing in the arch will cause compensation in the rest of the cranium and all the way down to the sacrum. This can have a detrimental impact on posture, causing a general collapse in the spine, as well as in overall health.

Addressing the facial bones, the cranium and the system as a whole, many compressions are gently releasing during treatment, creating space within her system. Ongoing treatment will be required but the impact can be transformative, not only for this client’s teeth and her smile but for her posture and general health as well.

Whether interventions were used or we had a ‘natural’ birth, the womb experience and birth process can leave a lasting impression on each one of us, causing repeat patterns in both our outlook and behaviour, how we respond to situations and the emotions we feel as we go through life.

I spent four days together with these beautiful souls - fellow Craniosacral therapists - exploring this, each one of us holding space and allowing the process to unfold according to what the body holds in its memory, its inherent wisdom and the expression of its self healing journey.

Gifting a new born the opportunity of Craniosacral therapy, to release any retained tension from its birth, may be the greatest one we can give.

This was a deeply profound journey lead by the soulful, Ray Castellino trained, Lin Vermeiren. My deepest gratitude for these 4 days in London.
