The photo that started it all...
I posted this to my Facebook 8 years ago today. I was lying in bed, having taken the day off work, in agony. My back pain at is worst. I'd just been to the doctors and they'd prescribed me Naproxen and Diazepam, on top of co-codamol which I'd already been taking daily.
I felt wiped out, physically, mentally and emotionally. I remember getting back from the doctors and crying huge sobs, having a long nap and then just lying in bed because moving hurt too much. My gorgeous Pedro laid on me, making sure I was OK.
This started the journey. First came referrals, physio, x-ray, MRI and a whole host of doctors and specialists appointments. Add to that hours of massage, acupuncture, osteopathy, myofascial release and other treatments that I was paying for privately.
It was then in April 2020 that I was told as long as I stayed on painkillers I wouldn't be in pain. I love the NHS and we are so lucky to have it, but seriously? Pain killers daily for the rest of my life? I just couldn't accept that... I was only 37!
So, on went my journey. Connecting the dots, realising that actually there was an issue structurally within my body but that it wasn't something the doctors could fix. I needed movement, I needed alignment... and luckily I found it. The rest, as they say, is history!
So many people I work with have tried a multitude of things and it's always helped a bit (after all, something wouldn't still be available if it didn't help someone) but they're still in pain or struggling with movement. Then they work with me and find "the missing piece" or "the thing that makes everything else make sense". They learn about their body, what is actually happening, and finally understand why that area hurts, why that joint got worn out or why they don't feel stable on their feet.
If you're in chronic pain please don't think it's inevitable. Don't believe there is nothing you can do or that you'll be like that for ever. You CAN change it! You just need to understand what's happening in your body and put in a bit of work to get it back to its optimal state.
I'm here 8 years later pain free, something I once believed would never happen!
