Most people think the knee just bends and straightens… but it actually moves in two planes. 👀

Yes, it flexes and extends — but it also rotates slightly each time you step, turn, or squat. That tiny spiral motion is what allows your knees, hips, and feet to work together smoothly.

When we limit that movement — or try to “protect” the knees by keeping them still — we can actually create stiffness, strain, or pain elsewhere (hello hips and lower back!).

Healthy knees move with the rest of the body, not against it.

When the pelvis tips forward (anterior tilt), it can compress the lower back.

We’re told these things are just part of getting older…

❌ Stiff joints
❌ Poor posture
❌ Loss of strength
❌ Aches, pains and slower movement

But what if they’re not inevitable?

Your body’s alignment isn’t fixed — it’s shaped by your daily postures, old injuries, and how you move (or don’t).
When you start bringing awareness to those habits and move your joints through their full range, your body begins to rebalance.
That’s when movement becomes easier, lighter, and more efficient.

There are plenty of strong, mobile, pain-free older people — not because they’re lucky, but because they’ve kept moving well and with awareness.

How well do you really know your jaw? 👄

It’s not just for talking and chewing — your jaw actually moves in three directions:
🟢 Open & close
🟢 Side to side
🟢 Forwards & back (protraction & retraction)

When one or more of these movements get restricted, it can affect far more than your mouth — think tension headaches, neck pain, even posture!

It’s Movement Monday!

This week we’re focusing on the fingers - learning about the phalanges, and how they move through flexion, extension, abduction and adduction.

You can find a video on my YouTube where I share how these small movements connect to the wrists and ways to gently improve mobility in the fingers.

Ever wondered why your posture feels off, even when you try to “stand tall”? 🧍‍♀️

Here are 3 common posture adaptations I see:
➡️ A pelvis that’s shifted forward - this can tighten and put strain on the lower back and hips
➡️ One hip hiked higher and a lower shoulder - throwing balance and loading off through the whole body
➡️ A forward head and sunken ribcage - putting tension in the neck/shoulders and restricting breathing

These subtle shifts don’t just change how you look - they affect how you move, breathe and feel.

This client came to me for lower back pain, but their foot plate readings revealed something interesting.

At the start, more of the left foot was on the floor, but 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱, and the pelvis was shifted to the right (the middle white dot on the first pictures). This was a leftover effect from a past left-knee injury — the body was avoiding it.

After just one session, the pelvis is more centred and the left foot is carrying more weight (see picture 4).

Small shifts, big difference. Every body tells a story — sometimes we just need to to start listening and give it what it needs.

✨ Movement Monday: The Hip Joint ✨

Your hips are designed to move - in all directions!
Flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, internal and external rotation… when even one of these movements gets lost, your body has to find workarounds. That’s when you might start to notice stiffness, hip pain, or even issues in your knees, lower back, or feet.

Your hips are a key player in how your whole body moves and feels, so understanding how they work is the first step to restoring healthy movement.
