“Just take all the drugs.”
Hands up if someone has said this to you during your pregnancy?! How did it make you feel?
When you’re pregnant, EVERYONE seems to have advice and most of the time, it’s based purely on their own experience.
The thing that really gets me about the whole “just have all the drugs” comment is that it’s often followed by something like, “So don’t bother preparing for birth”, or “Don’t write a birth plan, I didn’t.”
Now, if your plan is to have all the pain relief available, that’s totally valid! But here’s the thing, there’s usually a whole chunk of labour where drugs aren’t an option. Epidurals, for example, aren’t usually recommended until you’ve reached a certain point in labour. So, how are you preparing to handle that stage?
And while opting for pain relief is the right choice for some, it’s still important to understand the bigger picture. Did you know that an epidural can sometimes slow labour down and increase the likelihood of interventions like forceps? Yet it can also provide much needed break from intense sensations in a long, exhausting labour. The key is knowing your options so you can make informed choices.
Birth is a big deal. You’ll remember it for the rest of your life and it will shape your journey into parenthood. So don’t let other people’s opinions take away your confidence or your power in making the choices that feel right for you.
My Hypnobirthing course helps turn nerves into confidence so you feel fully prepared for a positive birth experience.
