My 6 years at ARKA have been extraordinary and life changing.
Nothing could have prepared me for coming to terms with the reality of death, or to feel so grateful for the knowledge of it.
To learn and work at a place of such integrity, compassion and humanity has been a privilege indeed.
The team are so down to earth that you might not notice how groundbreaking the ARKA approach is. But over time it becomes clear how extraordinary it is, and how much there is a profound need for places like it; places that reclaim our living and dying from the clutches of commerce and greed.

So if you’re wondering if this work might be for you, you could expect:
To not feel like you know what you’re doing for a long time – there’s a lot to learn

Every strange thought you didn’t even know you had about death to dance round your head while your brain assimilates reality

Rare opportunity to join the passionate team at ARKA! After 6 years B is sadly moving on, we wish her so well in her entirely new work. This means we will have a part-time position to fill.

The Funeral Assistant role is the team member supporting all of our work in a practical way covering all sorts from collecting people who have died, preparing people and our space for viewings, keeping our cars and facilities clean and tidy, attending at funerals as pallbearer, to keeping our indoor and outdoor plants happy. It requires someone physically able and strong, and who can be part of our on-call rota covering collections and calls out of office hours. It is not a desk based role, so barely any need for computer use, and neither is it primarily a client-facing role aside from occasional covering of the front office speaking to people on the phone and who come by in person.

You need to be self-organising, creative and a joy to work with!

We are inviting anyone interested to get in touch to learn a bit more about us and the role, and for us to learn a bit more about you before then inviting a small number of people to a more formal interview round.

Hannah ran a half marathon in Malta at the weekend, think the sunny blue skies just about made up for the pain! In under two hours so happy with that.

A stunning piece of felted art has arrived from a wonderful maker in Estonia.. we love it! This is the before and we will show the after once we’ve sewn it onto a stretcher cover. Then we will have yet another cosy beautiful option to cover people when we come to gently collect them.

New post on our website about caring for your dead - as we have noticed a move towards delays between death and the funeral that we wanted to talk more about, encouraging all to consider the dead as well as the living when planning a funeral.

Just here to sing the praises of our wonderful neighbour who produce delicious food Weds-Sun with an especially appealing array of sweet treats that changes to new delights every day! They are just two doors up from us and may have contributed to some weight gain amongst the team! Fantastic brunches, great coffee.. just lovely having such a nice space to suggest to anyone nearby to pop in to.

Countdown to our move! Surrey Street is where the ARKA mission began in October 2003. We are moving everything to our main premises in Islingword Road. We will keep you posted!
