Looking ahead to January...

Rosewood room bringing warmth to a grey day 🤎

At New Road Psychotherapy, our rooms draw on nature-inspired colours and textures to create an environment for sharing and reflection that feels safe and calming. In Rosewood you'll find earthy tones, leafy plants, natural cork panels and a lovely view of the trees outside.

In other rooms you'll find the influence of ocean blues, sunny yellows, sage and olive greens, and the chalky white of our Sussex landscape.

We have two locations in Brighton (28 New Road) and Hove (73 Church Road), with sixteen welcoming spaces and a whole host of experienced and compassionate therapists ready to support you through your challenges and growth.

If you're looking for low cost therapy, our accessible service offers weekly sessions for just £27.

Winter can be a season of cosy evenings, slower rhythms, and quiet moments of restoration after a busy year - but it can also be a time when mental health struggles feel more tender.

Shorter days and reduced sunlight can lower energy and mood. Colder weather and darker days can make us feel more isolated. The pressure to “be joyful” during the holiday season can amplify stress, grief, or loneliness. For all these reasons and more, this time of year can bring old patterns or emotions closer to the surface.

If winter feels heavy for you, you don't have to carry that burden alone. At New Road Psychotherapy, we’re here to help you navigate whatever this season brings. Therapeutic support can offer space to reflect, share and process your experiences so that you can navigate this time feeling more connected to yourself and others.

We look forward to walking through winter with you 🤍

NEW CPD WORKSHOP FOR THERAPISTS & TRAINEES

'Beyond Denial: Working with Client Self-Deception'
Tuesday 24th March, 6-8pm
Connexus Institute (5 The Drive, Hove)

Led by Patrick Brook, CTA (P), TSTA (P), this workshop is designed for therapists, counsellors, and mental health practitioners who wish to deepen their understanding of how clients (and we ourselves) unconsciously minimise, ignore, or distort reality as a psychological defence.

The session will explore:

🔵 The process of 'discounting' as an unconscious defence mechanism that blocks the processing of difficult experiences.

🟠 The four levels of discounting, from ignoring stimuli entirely to minimising the significance or solvability of problems.

🔵 Practical frameworks for recognising when clients (and ourselves) are stuck in patterns of self-deception.

🟠 How to distinguish between healthy selective attention and problematic discounting that keeps people trapped.

Tickets cost just £10 - book your place or find out more here:

SOOTHE & BLOOM: a new 6-week music therapy group supporting caregivers and their newborn babies (from 8 weeks up to 6 months) to connect and grow through nurturing musical experiences. Beginning late 2025 / early 2026!

About the group:

Join Paediatric Music Therapist Hannah Hayes Soulbird Therapies in a gentle and nurturing space to learn how your baby uniquely communicates with you. This small group will be tailored to each individual parent and child, and will be welcoming to all - whether you've had a difficult birthing experience or journey to parenthood, have a baby with a health condition or your own mental/physical health needs to consider, or are simply looking to connect with other parents and their baby(s) in a safe and therapeutic environment.

Through gentle lullabies and songs (some with signs), and new sound experiences to promote bonding and attachment, you will learn how your baby communicates with you, and nurture their sensory, emotional and relational development.

About Hannah:

Experienced in working with pre-term babies in NICU, and with babies with complex medical needs in a hospital setting, Hannah is passionate about using music to support parental wellbeing and promote positive bonding experiences between caregiver and baby(s). Using voice, guitar, ukulele, and other musical instruments, she seeks to create a womb-like environment in which you and your baby(s) can share special early musical experiences together.

The details:

The exact start date for Soothe & Bloom is yet to be finalised, but it will begin in December or January and run for 6 weeks, with sessions taking place on Thursdays from 12-1pm at New Road Psychotherapy in Hove (73 Church Road). Cost: £120 for all 6 sessions.

To find out more, have an informal conversation with Hannah, or express your interest in joining, please email hannah@soulbirdtherapies.com.

We look forward to welcoming you and your little ones to New Road!

Are you a trainee or qualified counsellor or psychotherapist with personal experience of cancer diagnosis and treatment? Could you spare some time to help with a postgraduate research project?

As part of her Psychotherapy MSc , Dr Charlotte Rustin is researching how the existential-phenomenological constructs that play a key role in counselling and psychotherapy training impact practitioners' own experiences of cancer and inform their professional work.

Dr Rustin's interest in this research stems from her own diagnosis and treatment for Stage 2 breast cancer whilst training to be a counsellor, during which time she felt that how she was experiencing the process of diagnosis, treatment and recovery felt intrinsically linked to, shaped and supported by the learning associated with the existential-phenomenological paradigm.

Whilst there is already research into the impact of cancer on individuals, research exploring the nature of counsellor’s/psychotherapist’s experience of cancer is limited. This study therefore aims to explore how a pre-existing understanding of existential-phenomenological constructs may interact with a counsellor/psychotherapist’s own experience of cancer.

“Write a blog,” he says.

I know my colleague’s words are kind and encouraging, yet they somehow sound like a demand. “Oh yes, I’ll put it on my list,” I reply. But where exactly on the list? Perhaps before doing my tax return, but probably after cooking dinner, cleaning the toilet, and topping up the kids’ lunch money.

There’s always a list and I am supposed to find time for all the things on it. Some are essential, some not, and others are supposedly “good for me,” like writing a blog.

So here I am writing on a Wednesday morning, after making a packed lunch, emptying the dishwasher, feeding the cat, and putting away the laundry. I sit down with a cup of tea and ask myself: "Why am I writing this? What purpose does it serve? Who would even want to read my words? Does it help anyone?"

In this Substack post, Humanistic Integrative Counsellor Amy Pedder explores how the act of reclaiming time for self-expression can help make the unseen visible in a world where women's care work often goes unnoticed.

On Tuesday, four of the team helped our Clinical Director Rory run an immersive careers workshop for Varndean Sixth Form College’s A-Level Psychology students.

After making introductions, the session began with an experiential grounding exercise and an exploration of the foundations of therapy. Following this, the group discussed the issues facing young people today from a therapeutic perspective, before considering how their assumptions about the work of therapy differed from the realities shared by our therapists.

We loved welcoming the students to our Hove centre and wish them all the best for their future career paths!

We hope to run more of these sessions, so if you’re a teacher looking for a way to give your class an insight into the world of therapy (or a trainer seeking to enrich your trainees’ learning) please get in touch! Email maddy@newroadpsychotherapy.com for more details.

Ever wondered how it might be possible to connect more deeply with infants before they have access to words?

As part of our 'Therapy Insights' series over on our Substack journal, Unfolding, New Road Psychotherapy Centre music therapist Hannah Hayes Soulbird Therapies has shared her thoughts on music as a 'universal pre-verbal language' - a way to understand what babies are expressing, and communicate meaningfully in return.
