Men's Mental Health Matters

I founded Therapy for Men after working with hundreds of male clients struggling with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, substance abuse, and sexual and relationship crises. I am a highly experienced clinician with postgraduate training in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and CBT and I have been supporting men with their mental health and wellbeing for over ten years. As well as running Therapy for Men, I work with adults and as a clinical assessor at The Rock Clinic in Brighton and I am a founding member of Brighton Lanes Therapy Clinic. I also spent several years working for the University of Sussex's Counselling Service and in Mental Health Support for Brighton Institute of Modern Music (BIMM). I have worked with a wide range of clients from the LGBT+ community and I have experience in working therapeutically with a number of issues that those belonging to the LGBT+ community face. As part of my commitment to breaking down the stigmas associated with men's mental health, I also routinely contribute to a range of high-quality media publications and projects. Sometimes you're just not ready to talk. You haven't quite found the words yet, or gained the sense of safety needed to begin to make sense of what you are holding on to, or perhaps what is holding on to you.

If you've never been in therapy, you might not believe that talking through your problems with a total stranger can help ease your suffering or confusion. Maybe you're ashamed of how you feel, afraid of what life will look like if you let it all spill out.

I could tell you that your therapist, if they're right for you, won't always feel like a stranger. That they can help you to build the trust that needs to come first and that they know that for some people, this can take time. That they have trained to walk alongside you, even in the darkest of places; that you won't be 'too much'.

But while I do believe all this, I also want you to have some resources for right now - you might not be ready to talk but maybe you're ready to listen to others who've walked similar paths, who are still walking, but have learned a lot along the way.

Podcasts can be a great way to connect with your own thoughts and experiences in your own time, at your own pace, as well as giving you more insight into what therapy entails. Here are some goodies:

1. Let's Talk About Mental Health

2. The Mental Ilness Happy Hour

3. Manup! UK Men's Mental Health

4. Young Blood - Men's Mental Health

5. Black Mind Chronicles

Powerful post from

Here in the UK, the statistics paint a similar picture...

report that:

Three times as many men as women die by su***de

Men aged 40 to 49 have the highest su***de rates in the UK

Men report lower levels of life satisfaction than women according to the Government’s national wellbeing survey

Men are less likely to access psychological therapies than women: only 36% of referrals to NHS talking therapies are for men

In addition, men are far more likely than women to go missing, sleep rough, become dependent on alcohol and use drugs frequently.

This is why I post on
