This Remembrance Day we encourage all GP practices to become Veteran Friendly Accredited to support veterans who may be silently struggling with their mental or physical health at this potentially challenging time.

Research by the Royal College of GPs involving 5,000 veterans found that, although more than half (55%) have experienced health issues potentially related to their service, one in seven (14%) have not sought help from a healthcare professional.

However, nearly two-thirds of veterans said they would be more to likely to seek help if they knew their practice was Veteran Friendly Accredited. Having taken the quick and easy step to become accredited ourselves, we have seen first-hand the difference it can make.

The free training and resources provided through the scheme have made it easier for us to identify, understand and support veterans and, where appropriate refer them to specialist services designed specifically for them, Not only has the programme helped to improve outcomes for our veteran patients, but it has also helped to save time and reduce repeat appointments.

It takes juts 20 minutes to sign up, and more than 4,400 practices have already joined the scheme. A University of Chester evaluation found that 99% of practices recommended it.
